I've used a idx on Barnstable beach on the Cape and it goes haywire anywhere near the surf. On the sand it detects black ferrous rocks.
I'm not on board with Mr.bill and Monte on this one.

Ancient guys using ancient technology.

Sorry you were unable to get your IDX to work at the beach. What did the repairman say was wrong with it?

Thanks for the link. As a classic III sl owner, I have bookmarked that thread :)

Great stuff!! I keep hoping Mr Bill will announce he will be doing mods again....WINK WINK....my idx pro is begging for it. I love that machine.

I'd like it if it was dual frequency like the BHi.d
Maybe you should consider a BHID.

A "shoot-out"? That sounds like two fellas with very differing points of view arguing over a topic or two. That's not what occurred in the link you provided, and if you follow the threads on this link:

I think you'll see that I have been in great agreement with Bill and the modifications he did. I enjoy the performance we can get from a simple-appearing Classic series detector, and have relied on having one around .... with 'Mr. Bill's' mods, of course. I used to use a modified Classic III SL at the Oregon coastal beaches, as well as a modded IDX Pro, and even put the IDX Pro to-the-test in some of the nastiest salt evironment you can find in this country (or anywhere) that is also a very iron mineralized ground environment. I am talking about hunting inland, away from the coast, but working around and in the Great Salt Lake in Utah.

The last visit there I was with a couple of friends, both using their Minelab Explorer II's, and me with my modified IDX Pro. Not only was one of them surprised at how well I did, but in some side-by-side comparisons he was more shocked at how poorly his Explorer II w/10

Based on all I read from Monte about the IDX Pro, I bought a used one from Find Mall's classified ads. I was fortunate enough to have Mr. Bill modify it before he stopped doing them. I have an assortment of ten different metal detectors (White's, Garrett's and First Texas) and I use them all, the right tool for the job at hand so to speak. I hunt a lot of old colonial thru early 1800's homesites and for the nail/ferous iron littered ones, the IDX Pro with Mr. Bill's mods is the best tool for the job. I have also used it with no problems on several of the South Georgia beaches.
