You have to be kidding me " fill in your hole"

I went out this weekend trying to find a new honey hole for detecting. I went to a old historic house, knock on the door. I started to ask for permission and the lady looked at my detector and said right away " NO" I asked her why she was so quick to say no before I could even explain the benefits for her and I. The lady replied , I had a gentleman last year, I gave permission to hunt my property and he left over 20 holes in my back yard and small garden.
My next stop two towns over, I came across a old farmstead that was converted in WWII to summer cottages. I drove in the entrance, The guy at the entrance asked if I was interested in a cottage for the weekend , I said no. I stated i was looking to split metal detecting findings with him. I also explained the cutting of a plug. not leaving a mess , filling in holes. His replay "NO". He stated I had 2 separate occasions where i gave permission to guys like you, who detect. For a couple of silver coins, its not worth the time I have to spend picking up old rusty cans that are left on the surface and hole that where not filled in.

So my Question:

Do people leave holes to mark where they have detected ?
Do they get so excited about their finds they keep forgetting to fill in holes.
Why??

I have a list of things I would like to say, "too bad I cannot say what I really feel" why they do not fill in their holes and leave a mess

Must admit in all the years that i have been detecting i have never been refused permission or even had a complaint about leaving holes un-filled,what i generally find is that once a farmer/landowner starts to trust you they usually are more than willing to expand the initial small permission to all the land that they own, also i do names drop if one can call it that and mention that the 1st land owner would give me a reference and then the snowball starts. So from one permission others can grow over time by using the word of mouth method.

I dont think i can remember when i either phoned or sent out snail mail to land owners, have a reasonable amount of access to land well into 4 figures and also access in my club to many times that as well, must admit i do see a few holes on club digs that novice folks dont fill the holes in properly and also have seen the scrap left on the top of the soil,we did loose a 1000 acre farm that the club had access too last year, but was relieved when the land owner granted just 2 folks including my self back onto this large estate.

Always take bottles of fine whisky for the land owner and some chocolates for the wife at Christmas time, always works a treat.

There are a lot of flat out irresponsible metal detectorists out there, including guys who have been at it for years, who are guilty of this. I have seen it first hand and it is ridiculous.

We have preached the need to fill in holes properly so many times I don't know what else we can do.

Idiots like these will likely be cause of the downfall of the hobby.

And, of course, they'll be the first to complaint that there is no place left to hunt anymore.

OK, i'll say it. These non-hole fillers are stupid-ignorant-no horse sense-no respect for other's property-dumba$$'s. AHOLES about sums them all up.

Thanks Ken for saying what I most likely would have refrained from saying but if I was there I probably would be tempted to hit them on the back side of the
Head with My Raptor digger, hoping that the common sense part of the brain would wake up and tell these boy's to "FILL THERE HOLES"

Somehow digging a plug would turn me off. I still think a thin screwdriver is gonna be part of the comeback equation for future detecting.

Ever tried recovering a 10" target with a screwdriver?

Only a few times. I make the "V" slit and fold the flap back. I don't then need to have a knife, shovel, or digger to alarm misinformed critics.

If you don't have a knife, shovel or digger, what are you cutting a "V" slit with? The sharpness of your wit?

"Ever tried recovering a 10" target with a screwdriver"

Come to Texas and pop targets at just 3 inches using only a screwdriver. IMO, you'll need a hammer to chisel to pierce down to the target with a screwdriver even at 3 inches and less.

 It's part of the society we now live in today. I see people throw trash out of car windows. Many of the houses in town are overgrown with weeds, beer cans everywhere, a nasty old pit bull tied up in the corner, cars parked on the grass, old motors sitting in the yard etc,. We are now living in a lazy, no repect for others, self centered world. It's just plain sad. I remember when I was growing up this was minimal and kids would get a good old fashion spanking for throwing trash around. Yes, I'm old school and proud of it. These #@^%&*$ that don't cover their holes are going to ruin this hobby and one day metal detetors will be permanently outlawed.....end of sermon,....thank ya'll for coming today...........:goodnight:

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I seen a guy come by with a bounty hunter and a spade shovel he complained that the park had nothing but Iron in it and he must have left 50 holes open allover tha park , Detecting was banned in that park , I don't know how they can think that doing that is O,K other than thats the way they are at home , and they think others think like them , or they justify leaving Iron and cans out of the hole because they must figure that was not what they was looking for .
