He gets a hair cut....New work boots from Wal-Mart....And a brand-new,,right out of the box,,Minelab GT....I took it out today for a test drive for an hour or so....I put the controls on pre-set and started swinging....I can tell you one thing about this machine,,it sounded like I was inside a pinball machine....I found my first penny today,,it was resting half and half on the grass and sidewalk....I kicked it in the grass and bingo,,the coil sounded off....Damn I am good!!!!!!!....Two questions,,how in Sam Hill do I pinpoint with this coil and if it null's over iron,,how do you relic hunt with this machine................

I bought my GT from a DFX user that couldn't stand the "pinball" sounds either and I got a heck of a deal on a 1 hour old machine.

Do get the book from Clive Clynick, "Finding Gold, Silver and Coins with the Minelab Sovereign" this book will really shorten your learning curve. Great information on how to read the tones.

As for relic hunting, turn the iron mask "off" and hunt in all metal, or zero discrimination.

I have had my GT out on the beach the past couple of days and it is AWESOME! I am sure there will be some great replies to your post and I am looking forward to them.

Welcome to being a GT user. After you get use to it, it is one heck of a machine.

I have been using the Sovereigns for close to 10 yrs. and I'm always learning something from using them. Rick(from ND) always suggest to new users to set the sensitivity in Auto until you get use the the tones the machine is making from the targets you dig. I don't know if you are a new user, but I agree with him. I also saw Mike from Va. Beach post to put some targets on a blanket and listen to the tones of the targets on the blanket. If you want to learn to pin-point ,once you get a target, try to get the center of the target by doing a cross pattern. As you are swinging the coil fwd to aft, then left to right over the center, you can start lifting the coil up as you are swinging the coil. This will narrow the signal and make it easier to pin-point. As for relic hunting when the GT nulls over some iron, you could switch all metal and dig if you are looking for iron targets. You need to swing the GT slow. Good luck. It's a really great machine

I know many that have tried the Sovereign the first day and wondered what did I get myself in for as nothing seems to make sense with this detector. This is a normal reaction as most will tell you. Once you see how it all works and get used to the tones you will be happy you got one I feel.
Now for setting if you are running preset you are starting off right and make sure the control that says TRACK/LOCK AND PINPOINT is in the pinpoint position as this control is only active when going to all metal and the only time you will use it to begin with is when you put the iron mask off/iron mask on/ all metal in the all metal mode for pinpointing. Once in this mode the meter will not ID and you only have one tone and swinging it back and forth across the target you should be able to tell where it is the loudest as this is the center of the target. Now the target can be anywhere from the tip of the coil to the heal of it, so while swinging over the very center of the target you can pull the coil back to you until you lose the signal. You now know the target is not under the coil anymore so move the coil forward until you get the signal again and it now will be at the tip of the coil. If it was not set in pinpoint than it may have a tougher time pinpointing I feel to begin with. Now I have one sure fire way of pinpointing too when I get a deeper signal or a iffy one as I will switch to all metal as my other switch is in pinpoint already and go side to side getting the loudest signal, push the coil to the ground so it don't move off that spot and turn 90 degrees. Now i will swing side to side again and when I get the loudest signal my target will be right in the very center of the coil. If it was a iffy signal I will hold the coil very still and switch to the disc mode again and slightly wiggle the coil and if the tone stays the same or increase it is one I will dig, if it nulls it is iron.

Now if you want to dig iron than you will have to run all metal mode and dig everything as there is no tone ID or visual on the meter. Most relic hunters I know are not looking for that much iron, but brass and copper which the Sovereign is great on you will get some good tones in disc.
If you want depth make sure you go slow and easy and work the repeatable signals and listen close.
