Yesterdays search

Got out to another park yesterday and got in an hours hunt. The SEF coil was working well found a wheat and some deep Lincolns.I had a micro meter attached to my headphones eye level and off to the right and was pleased with how well it worked. The meter wasn't a 180 scaled meter. The calibration was fixed and read 117 for a Quarter, 115 for a zinc and 95 for nickles.Need more time in the field but this may be a better option for hip mounting.Back to the park conditions,on the horizon the sky turned dark green and the wind started gust of 50mph decided to keep searching.I could feel the light rain and was about 200 yards from my Jeep.LOL got the hint and started to end my search working toward where I was parked.Just barely made it,the Sovereign and my gear was put in the rear cargo area right before the heavy showers soaked my equipment. The wind and rain was so bad I thought the top of my Wrangler was going to blow off,on the way home down trees and power lines required me to take another route.Once home the power was out, I hooked the generator up while my wife Pam rushed down to the barn to get the horses in and close the large 10X12 doors or they will blow off.Anyway you get the idea,by the way the power just came back on.HH Ron

Ron, thanks for the update on ongoing hunts, and those with the 12x10 as well. That eye meter sounds interesting. You can't scale it with a change in resistors?

We had high winds here yesterday too, after I hit the woods. I don't like being in the woods when deer hunting or detecting and try to stay away when that's the case, because one time a large tree fell within feet of me, and I know of a friend who had a large limb break his shoulder when deer hunting because of that too.

I took my new 13" Ultimate out yesterday to do some basic testing at the same low EMI site in the woods I test all my coils at, just to make sure it was getting the same depth in a basic air test on a clad dime as the loaner I had. Exactly the same 11" in depth as the loaner, which is a half inch less than the 12x10, so I was happy to see it wasn't somehow less "hot" at full sensitivity than the other Ultimate coil.

I then went on to hunt the woods for about 2 hours as time allowed, but this particular spot is devoid of even hardly any old shotgun signals or iron, as I was hunting in PP to see if I could locate beds of iron junk that might indicate areas of activity to concentrate on.

Nothing found but a few old shotgun shells and some old round tab style beer cans, but just the same it was good to hit the woods for a bit and test out this coil to make sure it didn't have any issues. I found at full sensitivity it was just a tad unstable, but not so much that it wasn't the normal edge of stability I normally run a coil at.

It slid over the ground clutter without much issue thanks to the spokes in the coil, much like I find the SEFs will glide over junk easier for me than a round DD with two large open holes and otherwise no spokes to help with that. Still, I think I'll zip tie some corruplast to it's bottom for woods and stubble field hunts to help with that.

GLAD YOU MADE IT HOME OK. WHAT'S A MICRO METER? I HAVEN'T HEARD OF THAT. SOUNDED LIKE WEST TEXAS TORNADO RELATED WEATHER. I GREW UP WITH THAT. THE WEATHER HERE NEAR SAN ANTONIO,, IS KIND OF TAME CYA-MARK

No hunting at my desert spots yet. The wind has been ugly for 3 days!!

Mark,I was at Lackland AFB a few years ago from April 26th to the middle of June.A big shock compared with cold weather in Michigan and that part of Texas was very hot and humid.Micro meter is very small about the size of a quarter. Thanks Ron

Critter this park was more wide open and better suited for the 10X12 SEF didn't get a chance for a good search because of weather conditions, but did find some deep clad and a wheat. Thanks Ron

John, yea I do remember the tumble weeds and the wind storms in your area.I have a lot of wind on the farm and working on a wind turbine, try to get some photos later. Thanks Ron

Ron, anxious to see photos of that wind turbine. Are you using an alternator from a car as it's generator? Been kicking around that idea for some time.
