Yesterday's hunt. Need some help on a crossed rifle pin I found and approximate age.

My buddy Lee and I went to an old park that was new to us. Hunted for about three hours and all I could come up with was clad. Lee lucked out and got a 1907 Indian and a 1910 Canadian dime. We then went to another park and the old XS started working for me. I got a 34 and 42 mercs and a 41 wheat and another wheat with the last two numbers cut off on the date. My luck it's a 1909S VDB!!! Nope, just a no date wheatie......:) Got about $6 in clad and had a great time. My wife got me a gift certificate for a wet suit for Christmas and I went down and picked it up today. I got my water detector coming from Kellyco and it should be here the first part of next week. Now I can do some water detecting and see what's out there in some of the old swimming holes. I will never do as well as Mr Chile, but it will something different and fun. HH.

Thanks Jim. The #7 probably represents the 7th cavalry, but I'm not sure on that one. I saw some crossed rifle pins on the internet, but I didn't see any that looked like the pin that I found. Mine looks like a bolt action rifle and the ones I saw on the internet looked like musket or flintlock rifles. HH.

R/A, (regular Army) pins that were worn on uniform Collars. They came about roughly the Spanish American war, late turn of the Century. They were worn through the Korean war and I believe into the early sixties. Judging the size by your dime, That is the size for the collar pin. Nice finds. Happy Hunting Grounds,

Savage. (EX-II)

the 7 above the cross rifles signifies the 7th regiment...in that case "infantry" not cavalry. The cross rifles shown cannot be id'd as far as dating unless a picture or discription of the back is given.

Around 1874 the Infantry switched from the hunting horn to 2 crossed 45/70 rifles and the insignia was of stamped sheet brass. This medium being very easily bent, many soldiers began to reinfore them with lead, and this method was soon adopted by the government. The attachment hooks were of the same type used on the civil war insignias..thin wire loops. THis too changed when soldiers found it convienient to soldier spring pins onto the back of the insignia for easy removal from the Kepi (hat). Eventually late 1890's even this design changed when the insignias were made from cast brass and a screw back was developed. Spanish american time perid saw officers wearing the insignia on their stiff collar and slowly transformed to wearing them on their collar though the uniform has changed.....so yours if it is cast brass is spanish american war and later..all depends on the back.

Nice find.

I see that you are able to get out still in your area. Remember to go back to those Parks since you know that there is Older Coins still at those sights. Congrat's on those Merc's and I like the Rifle's. Continued Success and Good Luck and HH.:detecting:

Thanks for the great info John. It looks as if at one time there was a hinged type attachment pin on the back which is gone now. It is brass, but not sure if it is stamped or a casting. Thanks again and HH.

Howdy James......:) In between the rain and snow we are able to get out, but not as much as we would like. We'll be back to that park for sure one of these days. I suppose you are still snowed in back there huh? We have a club hunt tomorrow at the university. I would rather hit that old park again, but you never know what might be lurking at this campus. Have a great new years and HH.

The thing is Eddie that we just got a measurable amount of snow on the ground today. About an Inch or so! And this was only the 2nd time this year we recieved any snow! The ground has been frozen even when we didn't have any snow cover and it has been hard not go out and do some detecting, so I have been doing more research for next year, even though I don't really need it since I have about 50 pages of sites already. We have had temps in the 40's but the ground freezes up again at night. I tried last weekend at an old Horse Track in a farm field and had to use a smaller Pick but didn't get anything but junk. Hope you have some success at your Club Hunt and Good Luck and HH.
