Yesterdays Finds

Hi all, went to a school site yesterday afternoon for a few hours and have attached photo of finds, $17, a silver ring a few cents and a 1919 penny. On the right is a bronze bust of a soldier I found at the same site. Although not solid it looks like it's been cast and is about 1/4 inch thick, 5 inches high and quite heavy. Was about 5 inches deep and came up as 34. Have only detected about a tenth of the area so have a few afternoons left. This site was originally Police paddocks used for grazing the troopers horses in the early to mid 1800's. The school dates from the late 1800's. There were also a couple of old houses that have since been demolished. The ground is black with ash and there are bits of broken crockery and glass so I'm hoping for a few older coins.
Cheers, Ken.

Hi Ken,
I love your finds! That brass head is very interesting, I haven't seen one like it. The area you're detecting in sounds very promising. I'd also be interested in a hidden bottle dump. I very much doubt it's been found yet. The fact that there are traces of glass and china is a good indicator. Particuarly if it's old green glass of the older champagne or porter bottles. (I'm also a bottle collector prior to getting into detecting). Have a look around on the down side from where the original police barricks may have been located. Look for any really old trees (pine) as stuff was often buried at the base of these trees. I found one bottle dump accidentally with my detector, as I was sweeping for another sound, and when I dug, 150 bottles came out of the ground at the end of the day! Your detector will pick up trash like tin cans, old lanterns, pipes, etc, if you don't use discrimination. And if you get an overload sound dig it anyway, it might be refuse of building materials, and bottles are often close by.
I once lifted a sheet of rusted iron sheeting, and underneither where several bottles of the old amber glass Warner Safe Cure medicine bottles, some valued at $500+.
Cheers Angela:)

Ken, the finds are simply GREAT!!! I think the soldier bust is really amazing and valuable (I have never seen anything like that). Anyway, it's always nice to see such finds on the post. Thanks!!! Good hunting to all!!!!!!!!!!:minelab::detecting:
