Lately it seems like our family has been stumbling upon properties near or smack dab in the middle of road construction sites. Yesterday Hotrod53 and I went to an abandon property that I'd accidentally found when I made a wrong turn one day while out scouting detecting spots. This place was right along a main road that has since been reduced to one direction while they widen the road and install new underground piping. There were two abandoned houses side by side, one had a small side yard about 20' x 30' and the other house was pretty much undetectable due to construction supplies and other junk lying around.
Within a minute or so Hotrod53 found a really nice old plaque that's around 2 1/2" square. We're not quite sure what it was for. At first I thought that maybe it was a carriage license. Hotrod53 thinks that it could have been some kind of burial marker. The 68 year span probably rules out the carriage license but I'm not convinced that it would have been a burial marker. We're still trying to figure out what it may have been for. I kind of doubt that someone was buried in that yard and if they were, they may be exhumed pretty soon once they doze the house and move some dirt around especially since the plaque was just a few inches below the surface. It is kind of interesting that the dates appear to be in two different sizes and fonts. Being that we were detecting near Pitsburgh and it reads "PITTS" I'm now leaning towards it being some kind of property registration marker.
A few minutes after he found the plaque I found a well worn .925 wedding band. Hotrod 53 found the only silver coin, a 1952 rosey. We each found another ring (both junk) along with a couple of wheats and some other memorials and a clad dime. I found some kind of junk jewelry Egyptian pendant and something that looks like it may have been off of some rosary beads. Seems like you can't go a year without finding a Chuck E Cheese token so Hotrod53 has met his quota early in the year.
