Found this 1917 Merc and this little container. What is it? It opens up but I can't get it open. Its about half inch thick and has a little hinge on it and the little places to hook your nail to pull it open. Some sort of make up box? Snuff can??
 
I think it is a womens compact from the early 1920s but I might be wrong. What's inside?
 
I found a cosmetic tin very similar to yours and an internet search revealed it to be a "Princess Pat" circa 1915. I haven't tried to open mine as the hinge would probably break. Mine VDI'ed as a 50cent piece and found it at nearly 12". How about yours?
