Yesterday's Finds- Possible Cavalry camp

Yesterday my brother and I checked out the 3-4 acres of open yard at his friend's place in Prince George County off of Ruffin Rd. Last June we checked part of the area but only found bits of trash and an old wrench which looks like it had a wood handle at one time.

Yesterday's hunt was much better using my Nautilus DMC IIB which I purchased last July. The first find of the day was a brass rivet with leather still attached and we got a bit optimistic. Then we found part of a brass harness buckle and a tiny flat piece of lead the size of a pinkie nail. Further out on the property we found some trash, then we moved back to where we found the brass items. Suddenly the target we dug was a US Cavalry Rosette! We were ecstatic then and we knew we had found a really great spot to hunt with other potential relics out there. Finds after the rosette were some trash, lead shavings, and a Petersburg tack button of unknown vintage.

I will soak the Petersburg button to see the rest of the inscription on it but so far it looks like "Petersburg Shir...."

Here's the keepers from the site- Lead shavings, tiny lead ball, brass rivet, part of brass harness buckle, Petersburg tack button, and the US rosette.

Niiiice !! I'd be going over that place with a fine toothed comb. Also, I would get the largest coil and deepest seeking machine I had and work it over real good. No telling what's there.

My bro and I are going to check it out again this weekend so I'll keep you guys updated on what we find. According to an 1863 dated map of the area, it was wooded. Now it's all open so some items may have been lost when the land was cleared.

Also my sister's boyfriend and his family own a couple of acres 100 meters up the road so that's another place that may yield a few relics.

Frankie, turn the disc down to about 10 or less and dig any signal that clicks. There's even some soil in Va. that you have to dig all signals because it's got a really difficult layer of topsoil that acts as a shield not only to the B but with every machine.

Super bit boss! Best of luck out there!

I have the Nautilus set on 9 disc and 20 transmit power. I may crank the power up a bit. There were other targets the all metal was sounding on but not on the disc. I'm wondering if those are deeper targets or iron/ minerals/ hot rocks. I posted a question about this on the Nautilus section but no answers yet.

My brother and I checked the area again today for about an hour. The first target were four Lincoln Memorials cents in one hole. Targets after that were mostly tin foil and alluminum can bits in an area we were just testing.

Later we headed back around were we found the bit boss and pulled what at first I thought may have been a flat button. It had that nice green patina you see on old relics. Then as I cleaned the dirt off the target it appeared to be another Lincoln cent. But as I cleaned the back I saw the distinctive wreath of an Indian Head Cent! The front was pretty crusted over and right now I have it soaking in olive oil. So far the date looks like 1861 but there's a blob of crud over the 6.

We're heading back tomorrow afternoon for a longer hunt.

Most of the ferrous signals will be more shallow than the conductive signals. If you suspect a CW camp then you should dig some of those iron signals to see what is there. I would turn the power up to 25-30. That is what I normally hunt with if there is no interference from minerals or other interference. I still get fooled sometimes by deep old iron as it will ring in with a good signal until enough dirt is removed. Hammer that site and HH!

The only good find from last weekend was the Indian Head Cent. Everything else was small trash, current Jefferson Nickel, and two shot gun shells. Sunday wore us out but we'll be back to check the yard again later this fall. So far we've thoroughly only covered an area about 10 yards x 5 yards.

Here's the Indian Head Cent. I'm still soaking it in olive oil to get the crust off of the 3rd number.

I finally can see the full date on the Indian Head Cent- 1891. I was hoping for 1861 but hey, an Indian head cent is a good find anyway. Sure beats a zinc Memorial Cent!

Will hit the site again this weekend. Hoping for at least an eagle button... Next weekend will be a site with Colonial Era activity.

Nice coin, Frankie. In the middle of digging Union buttons this past week, I dug a coin. Turned out to be the ripe old age of 1979. Nice IH
