Found some nice buttons that were all within about 5 or 6 foot from each other. 1 confederate script I, 1 yankee I and 4 flatties. I found a trumpet mouth piece nearby but still not sure if it's period or not. It was found way up on top of a hill in the woods with the other CW stuff and there's a mouth piece very similar in the Crouch book.

Awesome finds, Scott! And that's not just a Script I. That's a Manuscript I! British made. That's an awesome button to dig.

Congrats, man. Simply an awesome button.

Richard

Hey Scott, it looks to be period to me. Patina's right as well as the design/shape. It's nearly identical to the one Howard has in his book on page 37. That's one piece I haven't dug. But I've seen them dug and each came from a period site.

Nice finds, Scott. Is this a camp or house site?

Richard

Even if that's all you find, that's one super nice button. That's a rare one to find in any condition. It appears as if it may not have a backmark, which is noteworthy in itself. The manuscript I buttons were generally a Halfmann and Taylor backmarked button. A smaller number were marked by P. Tait of Limerick, Ireland. And, openly, when I saw the back, I thought immediately of a CS 173, one of which is a P. Tait button.

With this being a Union artillery position, yours could have been a souvenir that was lost.

Great finds, man. Hope you find a whole coatful in there!

Richard

That is as nice a script I button that I have seen in a long time. Confederated script I button are rare to find and very few in that condition. Great fine.....................TomB:detecting:

And yes, I'd say your bugle mouth piece is period. I've found several in camps and on battle fields.
Good hunting,
David
