What part of VA are you hunting? Civil War era sites? I'm planning on hunting a farm as soon as my schedule allows that has 3 old homes standing as well as numerous cabins (tobacco barns) that dates back at least into the 1800's. To my knowledge it's never been hunted. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I'm hoping for a small cache!

Dave,
Were the three coins in that container? If so, that is really cool. It's exactly what Charles Garret is talking about in his new book on cache hunting.
Great finds, congratulations.
Good Hunting,

Thanks, and yes the coins were in the compact, a first for me as far as money cache. Went back to the site today and had another good dig-- 1821 dime, some good flat buttons and Gardner bullets. I'll post the dime if its worthy , looks a little patina'd, wish it were in the compact, that thing preserved them well.
Thanks for looking

Sunday I got back to the site and found the remnants of the camp I was searching for , small but Confederate. It was 2/10 a mile to the rear of the house site. The 1821 Dime pic'd was found near where the cache was found, by the foundation. Seems this site was abandoned at the turn of the Century. This site has got me pumped, it has serious potential: coins, CW relics, bottles/trash pits etc.
Thanks Guys
Dave

Personally not a coinshooter....still needs some cleaning.

I guess (to me), when they get that old, I kind of think of them as relics! (Especially in Iowa, where it's fairly hard to find stuff of that age.)
I do sometimes hunt coins, but mostly hunt relics!
I always enjoy seeing your finds, Dave!

Thanks a lot Dale, and yes I'm very fortunate to live in area with such wealth of early history. I.ve been digging in Virginia dirt for...lets see..I was 12 when I started digging Indian Artifacts...then the early plantation/house site years...and the last 15 md'ing Civil War/colonial house sites...25 years now. Man I bet I've ate triple the amount of dirt then they say you will in a lifetime LOL Like You, I love those old coins and I consider them a nice bonus for my efforts....from the Relic Gods...lol. Anyway appreciate your appreciation.
