...and I am doing my homework...but it seems (for the money anyways) that I should get into an Explorer XS, bite the bullet and learn all about metal detecting with machine that will last, and provide features I can grow into. Is this wise? I'm seeing a lot of soverign and sunray posts, and these folks seem pretty happy...What's the general consensus? (I'm interested in working beaches and streams in the california mountains.
any input would be appreciated.

water you may want to look into a minelab excaliber. It's waterproof and has the same capabilities as the sovreign.

Beaches are great! However, If you are looking for gold in those mountain streams a gold detector will do better. Sometime one detector can't do it ALL!

the Sov and explorer both do well on the beach, but neither is waterproof, I think the explorer would be a better choice if your going to hunt nuggets in the creeks, just because its a bit more sensitive and has an adjustable iron mask where you can knock out only as much iron as you want to. Another choice you have is a Tesoro LST, a gold machine that does pretty well in other areas as well. I highly doubt it can out do a Sov or explorer on the beaches, but I suppose if your planning on hunting gold more often than beach it might be the way to go. If your planning on getting in the water past knee deep then you might consider the excalibur, or even a used Sov and chestmount in a plastic bag(probably best choice if you dont want to spend more than 400 bucks).. For the best overall performance however hunting in every situation and you dont want to have more than one machine my choice would definately be the explorer

now all I have to do is find the cash...
what a great forum.
