Met my brother at one of our favorite spots for a bit of detecting today. We've dug lots of coins here over the years. But with no-till farming, they are getting tougher and tougher to find in this 80 acre corn field. I only found four coins today. And one don't count because it was a Buffalo Nickel. I say it don't count because this old fair grounds was abandoned in the late 1880's. The only thing I can figure out is that either someone dropped it while hunting pheasants, or a farmer lost it while working the fields. Regardless, I did find three other nice old coins using my X705 with the small DD coil. An 1882 Seated dime, an 1888 IH cent and the find of the day, an 1877 IH cent.

Here is a closer look at the 1877 IH cent. I've not done anything with any of them yet, other than rinsing them with water. Not sure if I'll do anything more or not? After looking that 1877 IH cent up in coin books, and seeing how much they are worth, I think I better leave it alone!

WOW, now that's a find of a life time. Congratulations Randy and congrat's on the Seated, the other IH and the Buff, I'll bet your still dancing, I know I would be.

My brother and I were hunting an old park back in the early 1970's, and he found an exceptional 1909S. 37 years later, I'm finally starting to catch up! HH Randy

Believe me, it has been a long time coming! I have been detecting this field (off and on) for over 30 years. And over the years, it has produced some excellent finds for both me and my brother. But when they stopped plowing the fields about 10 - 15 years ago, it has been getting tough to find more than a few coins each trip. Glad I was able to rescue this one today. Thanks for the congrats. HH Randy

Congratulations on finding such a rare and valuable coin!

Randy, I had a fun day today even though I didn't keep up very well ( 2 crappy shield nickels). That 1877 IH is a heck of a good find. It would be interesting to see the total of coins we've found from this one field over the past 30 years! Wouldn't you like to see it deep ploughed just one more time?
I guess we'll need to hit it again.
CONGRATS!!!!!
Bill

Yeah that makes for a nice outing. I would love to find a coin to rival that 1877. Further cleaning probably not in best interest for sure.

Congrats on that great coin Randy! I know I would still be dancing! I like the seated and the other IH also. Very nice hunting, Beale.

Randy, In thirty years, of you and Bill hunting that field, I wonder how many times you have been close to that coin. CONGRATS on a great find.

I would be dancing all over if I dug that 1877.............that is my number one dream coin on my list to find!!!!!!!! CONGRATS...........MAJOR CONGRATS!!!!

I would be sending it in to ANACS right away to have graded/slabbed. They are the one company who will grade dug coins. WOW that coin is NICE, full liberty too. Is the back just as nice?

at an old homesite, it was along the broken sidewalk leading to the porch. The edges were badly corroded and like a dummy I sold it back then for $75, wish I still had it. Yours looks real good. Congrats. HH

Way to go Randy. On our farm in the Shenandoah Valley of Va. we don't plow anymore either. Makes me want to just plow up a few acres every now and then to have a fresh spot to dig. But every now and then I do find something good. Makes you wonder how it would be if I could turn the ground over.

you know, that could have very well been my find if things would have panned out! So........how bout send it to me anyway!!
Great find Randy!

VERY NICE and excellent finds, did you all know that 1877 IH is a semi key date? I just saw one in the SAME condition for $557 and a few others for $650 and up. Digger, hold onto that 1877 IH, that thing has a very low mintage, and is a very rare and expensive key date.

Thanks G4E. I wanted to send it somewhere, but didn't know where or how to go about it. I appreciate your comments and recommendations. HH Randy
