]My wife and I went to South Padre Island a couple of weeks ago. Took our 250 with us, tried to do some md'g by the water but it doesnt like that type of sand. So we decided to go up onto the dry san area and hit up some V.B. courts. Found some clad, alot of pull tabs (glass is prohibited on the beach....big fine if caught..But did manage to find this by one of the courts.Cant wait to go back after a big weekend there.....

I haven't taken my 250 to the beach here in NC yet. What kind of problems did you have in the wet sand? Sterling is always good.

Man, I would like to buy that yeller feller a drink next time I see um...

I was told by a friend in McAllen that metal detecting was forbidden on Padre Island. I guess he was wrong. Do you live near there? Though I live 600 miles South of the border, I get up to McAllen every five or six months. Would love to go beach hunting with you and MY Yeller Feller.

Padre Island is made up of several different areas. county, state, and federal. Federal ( or national seashore) definately doesn't allow detectors and have signs saying so. Naturally that's the best part because little shell and big shell that goes all the way to nearly mexico, is where all the wrecks wash ashore. The state part won't allow them either, although some people do it anyway. County doesn't have a lot of rules. In fact here are the specific laws for metal detecting from texas government site

Padre Island, from the Port Mansfield channel north is national seashore-No Metal Detectors.South of the channel, for about 10 miles ,belongs to the Nature Conservancy. Metal Detectors Allowed on the beach and the sand dunes.Try the base of Mansfield south jetty-Old beach line,450 year old Reals possible.Boca Chica beach at Rio Grand River-Civil war artifacts possible.SPI hotel area-jewelery,coins possible.10MI.S. of Mansfield jetty in dunes-Singer Ranch 1800s artifacts, coins possible.Metal Detectors allowed from river N. to Mansfield jetties.Look everywhere, there is lots of good stuff to be found.Good Luck

The entire length of the South Texas coast has a great deal of black sand. This is especially true in the wet area. It really messes with the VLF detectors. The dry sand is no problem up to a certain depth. Thats when you come across the black sand which may give you false signals/targets. Your best bet would be a multi-frequency or a PI detector. The PI being the best for this area. By the way, awesome find Egghunters:detecting:

Later,
Ernie
