yeller feller coil wire

I went back through the fourm letters and found one that said to tape my coil cord so that it ran stright up th shaft of my Ace 250.Well I just want to say thanks I now have two new MDs it is great.I have found so many more things such as gold rings and clad .I also tried this with my bounty hunter that I bought from Walmart and now if I am within three feet of car or a house with aluminum siding it goes off it just blows my mind. With this MD I have rehunted my old spots and found things that I SHOULD HAVE FOUND BEFORE! But NOW I have a question what about a smaller coil do they work or would it be a waste of time? Because now I seem to be digging a lot of trash and I was wondering if a small coil would help? THANKS AGAIN:super:

If you are hunting in a trashy spot, the smaller coils will give you better seperation and you will be able to lock on to good targets that would be missed by the larger coils because of masking. I use one a lot, hunting playgrounds, parks and schools where the trash is abundant. You won't dig less trash, but you will be able to get in between the trash for the goodies.

A tech from the factory phoned me theo other night after I had sent some questions by email. How many other manufacturers would do that? Not many! Anyway, she suggested that I do the same thing with the cable on my 2500. I wonder when some bright engineer is going to come up with a cable that is internal of the shaft and is shielded all the way up? Don't sound like that would be too much of an engineering problem, but what do I know? JIM

Jim If you Check out minelab Explorer that is the way they have theirs set up. They have the coil wire going straight up the back of the shaft until it gets to the upper rod. Then it goes inside of the shaft the rest of the way.
Smaller coils have always found me the better prizes in between the junk. Most people have walked right over the better things as hunting in between the junk is too hard with the Biger Coils.

I've been viewing this thread with some interest but have yet to see anything that answers a question about this taping of the cable. How far up should we tape it? Both with my Ace 250 and my 2500, I slide the lower shaft into the upper shaft as far as I can for both storage and travel. This only leaves me with about 4-5 inches for taping. Is that enough? Or could I tape it for the first 4 inches and then velcro-strap it when it's extended. Would that work?

I'd appreciate any input.

As far as the smaller coil, I'm personally campaigning to get the 5x10 elliptical for the Ace 250. I love it on my 2500!

I cable tied my wire to the stem at about the 6" mark. The cable tie is snug enough to prevent the wire from moving but not enough to pinch the cable. The real bonus is that I can also collapse the stem because the cable tie will slide back and forth.

You can use velcro or whatever works best for you. The idea is to keep the cable away from the coil. In your case velcro would be the way to go.

OK, a little help for a newbie please! If I understand this correctly I need to run the cable straight up the shaft of the detector,(ACE 250) for at least 6 inches? Then coil the rest on up? I am brand new to detecting and am enjoying this forum immensely! you guys and gals are great and have learned alot. Look forward to hearing the answer to this so I do it right. Any help I get is help I didn't have!!

Your friend in hunting,

Rick

When strapping your cable wire to the shaft, ensure that you provide some strain relief for the cable where it enters the coil. The coil is desgined to move and be readjusted as you hunt.

Locking the cable hard to the shaft and then repositioning your coil will stress the wires at this juncture and could cause premature failure.

The small coil is great in trashy areas and around metal equipment of any kind and it has excellent depth.
