Xterra's enviromental cover. The good and the bad. :ranting:

My xt 70's enviromental cover is not fitting like it used to. To be honest I don't like covers at all. This cover is getting big wrinkles in it and some buttons are hard to push. I'm thinking about just using it if it rains of very muddy. Here is my question. Has anyone wore through any of the lettering on the buttons?

The cover is cheap enough to be replaced as needed. It does fit tightly but this is to prevent it from shifting. The most common reason for it not fitting correctly is because people (including myself) forget to pull it over the metal coil-plug connector on the rear of the control box.

The coil cover also prevents dirt and mud from ending up on the buttons. The text on the buttons is probably silk screened onto the plastic surface but there may be another method which they used. Without the cover, the machine may become susceptible to salt air which of course would not be in the interests of salt-water beach users. I have a deep scratch across the clear plastic panel of my cover. If the cover wasn't in place, it would have been etched across the face plate of my control box.

I've had coarse volcanic dirt between the cover and the buttons and it didn't affect the text printed on them. Whatever technique they used, the text print method seems resistant to a lot of abrasion. My control box still looks absolutely brand new... which helps in keeping the resale value high.

I have mine pulled down over the jack. I just wondered if anyone else has wrinkles in their covers? I know it's cheap insurance to have one. I know there is another company or person building different covers for the Xterra's. Does anyone know where those can be purchased?

Just cut a hole from the coil connecter opening to the bottom of the cover and it will slide on and off easily.

I don't like mine either... It's tough to get on and off, doesn't exactly fit correctly and I hate that I have to take it off to access the batteries. However, it's the only thing I have to protect the head unit, and my hands get very dirty and dusty when digging. I keep it on as a must to protect my machine. The Xterra-70 is an expensive unit, and I need to keep it clean... So I baught the flimsy cheap cover.

Great idea, Thanks. I may try that. I was thinking of getting some sort of Velcro interlock sowed on so that I can adjust the tightness...

Kurt has the answer.

I have had mine like that nearly 2 years, add welcro to both sides and thighten below the cable connector.

Its so easy and work better then it used to.

Just cut at the rear ov the cover, from the bottom up to the hole for the connector.

Adding velcro to the undersides of the cover would stretch the cover and take the wrinkle out. I may just do that? But I thought somebody already solved the problems and sold the covers. Anyone know who makes the improved covers?

I got a couple for my XLPros from a company out west. I've dropped them a line to see if they have some that fit, or could make some for the X-Terra.. I'll keep you posted. HH Randy

Yea I have wrinkles in mine. I have one corner that does not fit well at all, never has. Even with the cover on my key pad has gotten some stains on certain buttons. They do not want to come off either.

Randy if you do get some info let us know for sure, Beale.

Hey all,

It's already been mentioned somewhere,I just forget who wrote it.

I keep a sandwich baggie in my finds bag.

One day just for kicks,I tried it on the 70 and it fit (the longer end to the rear).

So it works in a pinch, to keep by baby dry.

Gonna order a real cover when I order a 6' coil, but for now,,,,

Thesaurusaccessories (it's a mouthful, I know) sells eftermarket covers for the XT70 on ebay uk. They have velcro straps that go under on each side for snug fit and a velcro-fastened flap over the battery compartment. They even have a small flap over the hole for the cable connector to prevent any drizzle to sneak in that way. I use it myself and am extremely happy with it. When on, it can basically be left there indefinitely (I only remove about once a month to clean out any dirt that has found its way inside).

gold bug of utah responded, telling me that they don't make a cover specifically for the X-Terra. I know some guys have been using one make of cover for a different make of detector (e.g. X-Terra cover on the F75) Maybe if you could provide the dimensions you need to gold bug, they'd have something that would fit. Just a thought. HH Randy

I just contacted Minelab about improving the fit on the environmental cover on the X-Terra's. Knowing Minelab, I think that they will make the responsible people aware of what is going on....Best to all, Richard

UpDate: Just got an email back from Minelab and they are passing the information along to responsible parties.....Richard

From their ad on the online auction site.....

I saw them but didn't know how to convert the price. I would have paid $30.00 for it but at $50.00 I may sew some velcro to my wrinkled one?
