Xterra finds for the last 8 weeks

Put away my Vaquero for a while to learn the Xterra 705. I hunted mostly the same sites I always do, since I haven't found many new places lately. This is a compilation of the finds there weren't foil, bottle caps, cans, large iron such as ax heads or plow blades. Found 122 zinc pennies, 1 wheat cent, 10 nickels, 29 quarters, and 40 dimes plus one euro penny, an Argentinian peso, and a bus token. I find it funny that I find so few nickels. Also, found a small silver ring but not much jewelry and no silver coins to date. Found some old shotgun shells and rifle shells, too. I do usually hunt in program one or two.

Nice array of items. How are you liking the machine so far ???

Well, I haven't used the VAQ much at all. I really like its ability to tell me if I have a quarter or dime before I dig, I like the tones so I do not have to watch a meter or try to interpret single beeps. I don't really know about depth yet since I haven't done any successful relic hunting yet. I don't know what I am missing by not digging everything, but it is easier on my body to do more cherry picking at my age! Overall, I like it and have no complaints except for the fact that the ID numbers will jump around a lot at times. I also don't really no how to interpret 46 and 48 numbers. They seem to be big iron and hot iron rocks. I also am not sure what the ID numbers mean once you start pinpointing a target.

Thanks,
Andy from Hillsborough

hombre,
The 48 is, most likely, "wrap around" from iron. If you look at the vid#s as being a circle instead of being a line, 48 is right next to the negative #s. Therefore the term "wrap around". Someone else described this (on this forum I think) in this manner and it made total sense to me. 46 is worth a dig though.

It's in Randy's book. He calls it his "Theory of Circular Discrimination".

Nice bunch of finds. You are doing good. I dig several nickels but they are usually 8-14 on the vdi.

Andy, I had a Vaquero for a year or so. It was a very deep machine and found some good stuff but, I got to where I hated it. I just don't buy the "I can tell the difference between trash and treasure by the slightest tone change." I worked hard to learn its 'language'. I was a Tesoro user for 29 years before that and so many other brands before even that.
I so enjoy using my 705. I also am not sure yet on its depth because coins here just don't normally get too deep. I've gotten signals that I dug 10,12,15 inches and quit digging because the odds of it being a coin were pretty low.
Once you get the hang of the 705 I think it will be your go to machine. Obviously the tones don't bother you like it does others. I personally wouldn't care if it sounded like screaching tires if it finds me the kind of treasure I hunt for.
Best of luck.

Thanks. I still like the Vaq but I was going out with friends who had $1000+ machines and they seemed to be finding much more than I found. I was spending too much time digging old iron which didn't DISC-out well or if I DISC it out I lost depth. My main reason for choosing the Xterra was that Argyle1 convinced me it got good depth and I wanted a tonal machine with ID. So far so good! I found a lot with the VAQ, but my hearing might not be good enough to pick up the subtleties as I lost a lot of my high freq. hearing with age. With the Xterra, however, I still don't dig unless I get a good signal in multiple directions.

Looks like you are on your way.

As info. Some time back someone posted that they had just broke the 1000 mark on silver coins using the 705. Can't remember who it was but it goes to show you what the machine is capable of.
Good luck.

Love my 705,wish I had bought it instead of the Omega. In my ground nickles id at 12, for me if the id bounces I end up digging a pull tab or the eraser from the end of a pencil. As far as depth I haven't dug anything over 5" yet but I feel its just because of the places I"ve been hunting. However last weekend I got a very faint signal with the depth indicator maxed out and a solid id of 38. I believe the target is either a wheat or silver dime since I have found both at this school. I didn't dig tho because we haven't had any rain and I didn't want to leave a unsightly place on the school ground. So after we get some rain, whenever that gets around to happening I'll go back and see what it was.

Nice diver ring

If you found all that after previous use of another detector in the same areas. And your just learning the 705..Wow..You may find many more good items as you get more familiar with it..

I can't imagine you are not taking a serious step up going to the 705. I think you are getting so much more flexibility to adjust to site options and choices to set up to your preferences. Good luck matching or exceeding the finds of your friends. Focus, sweep speed and tighter overlap patterns will improve hits and faster recovery time will bring more finds. Its not just the machine as much as the man (or woman?).
