Xterra 705

There are a couple features that I like very much. Although I don't need the extra Pattern (I hunt in all metal most of the time) and I don't use the backlight, I do like the Tracking GB offset and the Pinpoint Sizing. I like to run my X-70 with the ground phase adjustment a little bit positive as I believe it allows me to obtain better depth. With the 705, I can run in Tracking mode and maintain that positive setting. With the X-70, I used Prospecting mode for target sizing and pinpointing. The Pinpoint Sizing feature of the 705 allows me to size up a target while maintaining the TID. Overall, I believe my 705 hunts a bit deeper than the X-70 in that the audio response doesn't drop off as quickly on deeply buried targets. Instead, the 705 provides a "whisper" signal on targets that are beyond the reach of my X-70. JMHO HH Randy

i have the 705 i hunt in parks can you tell me what settings you use say like the ground balance is it in auto?and the threshgold do you do auto?and the tracking pos numbers or neg, thanks

I have been hunting with my threshhold set to "0" , I don't use the GB offset yet, probably because I haven't figured out how or am to lazy. I have been using tracking lately.

If you don't use tracking, then learn to GB properly. Noise cancel, turn down the sensitivity and in all metal after finding a clean spot, auto balance. Then turn the sens back up.

Did I miss any thing?

Good luck and HH

I'm still a noob with my 705, but so far I love it! I've hunted a couple tot lots and even hit some targets that are below the weed barrier-my other detectors didn't signal those! I've prospected with it and found some cool reilics (unfortunately no gold), waded with it and found gold jewelry. I'm still learning this detector! Very soon I'll be taking it on some hunts at old farmhouses. The crops are mostly down and the old coins are a-waitin'!!

How well does it work... Well I sure don't miss any of my other detectors! I used a Garrett Scorpion to pillage a TON of tot lots, I still have JARS of change! I also found some old coins with the Garrett. I did a short stint with the ACE 250 and loaded up a ton of change with it too, but I didn't like it because it has no ground balance. Previous to that I had a Tesoro Silver uMax, great little detector as well, but the Xterra 705 leaves them ALL in the dust.

Greetings all,

I've been asking around to get opinions on a MD for a newbee and I've just about decided to purchase the 705. Lots of experienced folks on the forums have tried to steer me towards the ACE 250 as a better entry level MD.

Is there any real good reason anyone could think of that would make the 705 not a good choice for a newbee. I've got the time to learn, if that's the only reason a simpler MD would be recommended over the 705.

Thanks,

John

John,

The ACE 250 is probably the most popular entry level detector based on price point and simplicity of operation. The advantage of the price point being that if you find this hobby is not for you then you have not much invested.

As far as simplicity the 705 can be used as a turn on and go with factory default settings. Much of this will depend on how patient you are and willing to not overreach too soon. Discipline will be important in taking baby steps first and not having unrealistic expectations. Read the manual, look at the FAQ and see if you feel you are grasping the 705. If not consider a 305 or 505 as either are a magnitude more capable than an ACE 250. And that is not meant as a knock on the 250 but a recognition of the added features/performance of the Terra series available at this price point.

What ever you decide I think you can see that there is a lot of support available on this forum. There is a good group of people who will try to help answer your questions.

Thanks Bill, It's good to know the 705 has a turn on and go mode. Like anything else, I'm sure it has a learning curve, and we can expand our hunting abilities as we go and then have a top of the line model without having to trade up.

Thanks,

John

Well I am on my 3rd 705 since May. The first decided to play the pinpoint target ID sound nonstop after a few days. Had a hard time using that feature in shallow water or even wet sand before the nonstop ringing. Took it back to Kellyco and got another one. After a month or so, it started to shut off every time I put it down to dig a target. Then had to reset everything when it was turned back on. Eventually it wouldn't turn on at all, so back it went to Minelab in Vegas. Not really happy with service either. The tech I first spoke to told me to send it back and it would be repaired and returned the same day. I sent it out immediately and waited. 6 days later I got a call from a service supervisor named Trina, she wanted to know what to do with my machine after it sat in her office for three days. So buyer beware I guess. I also got a Viper Trident in the deal from Kellyco at a huge discount. It works perfectly every time and I have found plenty of coins in and near the water, even an anchor that was down about 6 feet. There is no ground balance or beach mode or other bells and whistles. Just turn it on, set sens and disc and go. Very simple and easy to use. I just got the 3rd unit back and have not tried it out yet, it does turn on and they gave me fresh batteries for my trouble, yippee!! I am heading out to the Rockies to search some known nugget producing creeks in a few weeks and am debating on putting more $$ into this rig for a DD coil. Any input would be appreciated.
