Xterra 70 question

On my 70, when you use the mode auto key to go to the prospecting mode, the iron mask numbers don't come up. Just a couple of dashes. If you hit the all metal key at this point, then the iron mask numbers appear. Hitting the all metal key again will take you to another prospecting mode with the dashes. In order to go from prospecting to all metal, I have to hit the mode auto key. You can not toggle between prospecting and all metal by using the all metal key. Is this normal? From what I understand, this isn't how it's supposed to operate. I have tried resetting the whole program to no avail. Thanks for your help.

May be wrong cause i dont have the machine here to cross check it but.

The iron mask does not work in beach mode.

I believe there is two modes in prospecting also that you toggle in and out with the all metal button.
That is Iron mask and all metal just as the button says.

If I remember correct that is why I detect in a cleared pattern one instead of all metal, that will keep the 70 inside the iron mask mode when I toggle between Disc and prospecting.

The X-70 has two modes of operation. They are the Coin & Treasure mode and the Prospecting mode. Within the Coin and Treasure Mode, we can either hunt within one of three discrimination Patterns or in the All Metal mode. Similarly, in the Prospecting mode, we can either hunt with zero iron mask or hunt with the iron mask set at any level from 1 - 20.

On the X-70, you can access the Prospecting mode from either a Coin & Treasure All Metal mode or from a Coin & Treasure Pattern mode. In either regard, you to to Prospecting by pressing the Mode Auto pad.

If you are hunting in the Coin & Treasure All Metal, and switch over to Prospecting, you will see the two dashed lines. These dashed lines represent the "all metal" Prospecting mode. In other words, it is Prospecting with a preset "zero iron mask". If you want to hunt in Prospecting with iron masking, you simply press the all metal pad and you will be switched over to Prospecting with Iron Mask, and the LCD will display the numbers representing the level of Iron Mask you are set up for. You adjust the amount of "iron mask" by pressing the -/+ keys. The higher the number, the more Iron Masking you have implemented. You can switch back and forth between Prospecting "all metal" and Prospecting "Iron Mask" by pressing the all metal pad. To go back to All Metal Coin & Treasure mode, you will need to press the Mode Auto pad again.

When you go to Prospecting from a Coin & Treasure Pattern, you will see numbers (1-20). These numbers represent the level of Iron Mask you have set for that particular Prospecting mode. Again, you can adjust the amount of "iron mask" by pressing the -/+ keys. The higher the number, the more Iron Masking you have implemented. Zero iron mask is basically the same as the "all metal iron mask" you have when you switched to Prospecting from the Coin & Treasure All Metal mode (above). Technically, when you go to Prospecting from a Pattern mode, you only have one mode of Prospecting and that is with whatever amount of iron mask you set. You will not have a true "all metal" Prospecting mode. But, as I said, running with zero iron mask would be similar.

To help understand this better, think of the two different Prospecting methods like we do the two different Coin & Treasure methods. In Coin & Treasure, we can set a Pattern to have zero discrimination, making it basically an 'all metal" Pattern. And we still have the preset "All Metal" mode. If you access Prospecting from a Pattern, you can set the Prospecting mode with zero iron mask, making it basically "all metal" prospecting. But, you can't switch back and forth between a preset level of iron mask and all metal iron mask. If you want to switch back and forth between "all metal" Prospecting and Prospecting with iron mask levels (other than zero), you will have to access Prospecting from the Coin & Treasure All Metal mode. Then you simply switch back and forth between all metal Prospecting and Iron Mask Prospecting by pressing the All Metal pad. And again, to leave the Prospecting mode and go back to your previous Coin & Treasure mode, (either a Pattern or the All Metal) you must press the Mode Auto pad again.

I hope this helps explain the differences. HH Randy

Thanks Randy and Bjorn. I appreciate the great help and explanation.from you both. Take care.

I run mine like Bjorn, with a cleared disc pattern and toggle between Prospecting and that when cross checking targets in bad junky goldbearing areas. Works great for me. I only use a pattern with some IDs blanking when hunting for coins from yesteryear when its just so thick, the junk, that my ears and brain go into overload from target sounds. Though my better half reckoned I well and truly "overloaded" years ago.
