Xterra 70 coil help

HELP PLEASE
I live in the outback Queensland and need help in setting up my xterra 70 to find gold as I already use a GP3500 and find gold with it. It has the standard coil with it was purchased, I need the inside help with what setting I should use to find gold and is the standard coil good enough or should I purchase a DD coil which I see a lot of article's written by BT states to uses the DD. please help anyone.

Reasty, Like you said, BT uses the higher frequency DD coils for gold prospecting. I'm sure if he sees your post, he will respond. In the meantime, in case you didn't take a look at the FAQFAQ section above, here is a series of posts BT made concerning his settings and coil choices.

u have to use the dd coil with the xterra or it wont run in prospecting mode, as soon as u flick it on to prospect mode with the concentric it will go crazy, i,ve been using the 10x5 dd but im yet to try it for gold but for coins its great so it would be a good all round coil.

I found your comment about the Prospecting mode going crazy with concentric coils differs from what I have experienced. I have not had that problem. In fact, on both DD and concentric coils, I use the Prospecting mode for target sizing. I use Prospecting for pinpointing on the concentrics. But chose to "wiggle and drag" the DD coils in Coin & Treasure mode, to pinpoint. JMHO HH Randy

I'm in Queensland too and get out occasionally when I can to hunt gold. I'm no expert on the subject but I would recommend the Elliptical DD 18.75kHz coil as your main prospecting coil on the Terra. I also have the 6" DD coil but haven't used it for prospecting as much as I have used the Elliptical. The XT-70 will complement your GP3500 very well. As far as using the stock concentric coil for prospecting I have never done so myself. I know that in Alaska they use the concentric 18.75kHz coils on the Xterra with great success but there ground conditions are alot more stable (quiet) then ours of course. The 70 in prospect mode is a very sensitive machine and can take some time to master its ways.
Cheers!

Nuggets right about the coil choices, the eliptical DD tops the range for all round performance and the little 6" is a screamer amongst the scrub and hard spots to swing in. The bigger open web DD is great on depth but does pick up a bit of interference if its around and sometimes cant be run as high on the sens as you would like to because of that.
If I had to recommend just 1, then the 10x5 wins every time. Use it slow like you would your Pulse machine and dont rush it, let the tracking do its job and dont go faster than it can keep up with in the ground type your detecting.
The concentric in all of the places I detect for gold in Vic is as useless as an Esky in Antarctica. But, for coins and relics its great so dont write it off for those.

Thanks to all the positive feedback from all on my question on coils, please could I take it to the next step and ask for all setting which my help me find the yellow stuff.

Reasty. Settings vary from place to place, I know you know that but anyway.
I mostly run mine in Tracking giving it the occasional reminder to fast track by hitting the Track button now and then "twice" to take it out of and back into Tracking to initiate the fast track feature, constantly. If you get noisy ground then firstly try slowing your sweep right down, eg 6 to 10 seconds from go to whoah, still noisy then drop the sens down till you have just a gentle background, now and then, roll from the threshold as the tracking adjust for the minerals. I like a lowish threshold and a low tone of 10. Some like it higher but I have found for me that the higher Tone in bad ground makes differentiating ground noise from faint target sounds almost impossible. Its a personal thing though. Importantly though if you set the Iron Mask anything above 1 in bad ground areas you can and will at times have your machine mis, classify gold. Especially if it is associated with equal or larger amounts of impurities like ironstone, iron pyrites and so on.
1 works fine with most of the Iron junk and really , by raising it to say 5 or 10, theres no great advantage in my experiences doing so.
You end up getting a feel for it all though, take your time to get to know it and you will love it in the end. I call mine..... well thats another story:inlove:
