Xterra 50-New User

Hi everybody! I just purchased an Xterra 50 brand new. I have never used an xterra before and am wondering If I am getting correct operation with it. I have noticed that when I am using it, even when I have it in pattern 2, that I can hardly hear the good targets amongst the barrage of sounds I'm getting. Keep in mind that it is properly ground balanced and the sensitivity set low. I am just curious why there are so many sounds coming from it, And then I go over the same area with my Tesoro and all I hear are the good targets.
Is this suppose to be a real noisy machine, does it sound like a have a problem? It seems to hardly ever lock on to one target, except when there is a surface coin.

Good Question, I too will be standing by for aresponse to your post. X-70 seems to operate in the same manner.

If it is working properly, and it is being operated properly, X-Terras are not noisy detectors. On the other hand, if it is a problem with the detector, you need to get it fixed. To help figure it out, I'll need some additional information. But before I ask questions, let me address the Pattern 2 setting.....Pattern 2 on the X-50 rejects ferrous targets, the two lowest conductive target notch segment and two segments that fall in what is considered to be the pulltab range. This will not reject all foil or all pulltabs as they are not only found in those two groups of notch segments. If you are wanting to only dig US coins, you could modify your Pattern to reject the notches that do not represent those coins. (you can find a target ID chart for US coins in the FAQFAQ listed near the top of this page) If you intend to dig jewelry as well, you have to accept the fact that some of it will register the same as trash, regardless of the make or model detector you are using.

Which Tesoro are you using, which coil is on it and where is the discrimination level set?

Did you try changing the Noise Channel on the X-50? How does the X-50 behave in an area that is not loaded with trash? Have you dug any of the targets to see what they are? Which coil are you using on the X-50? What is your GB setting. How fast are you sweeping the coil? Where is the sensitivity set? Does it lock on individual targets in the Pinpoint mode?

Randy

The Tesoro is a Tesoro Cibola, 9 inch coil, set just above pull tab. And I have noticed that when I am in an area free of trash the Xterra runs perfectly. Solid target response, and great depth. But I like to hunt parks and schools and it seems hard to pick out good targets amongst all the trash signals Im getting. I am beginning to feel that I just need more time on the machine, Ive used the Tesoro everyday and guess I am just use to the way it operates.

Randy is the expert, but I'll try to help out a little, and he can correct me if I'm wrong. I think if you have the Cibola set just above pull tabs, you are rejecting more targets than the Xterra set at pattern 2. From your statement that the Xterra works fine in an area without a lot of trash, my assumption is that it is working fine, and you are picking up targets with the Xterra that you've disced out with the Cibola. After hunting with a single tone machine, it took me a while to get used to the changing tones of the Xterra. But if you are over a single good target, the Xterra will lock in on that target. Now if there are multiple targets present, you will get that doe rae me tone change. Try uping your disc and see if it settles down, or maybe reduce your sensitivity. Also try to waggle the coil over a particular target to see if you can get the number and tone to lock. I like the Cibola and cussed the Xterra a little at first, but now I hardly ever touch the Cibola anymore. They are two very different machines. The Xterra provides a lot of information. Now when the six inch coil comes out, some of these problems will be moot. Good luck.

You just completely said what I was trying to get across. Maybe it is that I am just use to the single tone machine. I must say that I seem to get a little deeper with the xterra. Thanx for your reply

If you are comfortable running your Vaquero with the discrimination set a little above pulltab, you might modify your X-50 similarly. That would require setting notch segment 9, 12 and 21 to reject, as well as those factory preset in Pattern 2. Once you get "use" to what the higher tones represent, you might be able to hunt with less discrimination (or all metal) and allow your ears to assist in determining which targets are keepers by simply ignoring those low tones. One last suggestion would be to hunt with your coil a couple inches above the ground. On concentric coils, that will make the detection area less with each swath. (allowing the detector to take smaller bites!) This is what I have resorted to doing in trash-nasty areas. At least until the smaller coils are commercially available. HH Randy
