Xterra 30 & 70

I bought a 30 for my son a few months back. I'm so impressed with the machine that I'm considering buying a 70. I know there are a lot of features on the 70 that the 30 doesn't have, but is the 70 any deeper than the 30? Thanks for your replies. This forum is very helpful.

Hi Shenandoah,

Depends if you like all-metal hunting. The X-Terra 70 in Prospect Mode is extremely good and will easily locate items missed with the X-Terra 30 or 50. The catch is the extra junk you dig! The X-Terra 70 has a reasonably effective Iron Mask setting in the Prospect Mode but it must be used with care.

The bottom line is if the digging is easy or the targets few the Prospect Mode is great. It is the single reason why I have to have the X-Terra 70 instead of the 30 or 50.

Does the X-Terra 70 disc mode do better than that on he 30 or 50? Well, in general I'd say yes. The 70 has a better ground balance system with more range and a salt setting. So you can get better Coin Mode performance from it in difficult areas.

OK, let's see if I can get this across without feeling like you've gotten off of one of those high tech roller coasters.

A. Yes if you are using it(X70) in high mineral content or rapidly changing ground. For the following reasons:

1. The X30 is a fixed GB & the X70 adjustable.
2. The X70 has Ground Tracking which will adjust automatically to ground that varies.
3. The X70 has a saltwater GB mode for beach situations.
4. The X70 has a stability mode to give greater target ID confidence in rough ground.

B. Other adjustments affecting depth:

1. The X70 has much higher sensitivity resolution settings allowing it to be brought to the brink of instability.
2. The X70 has a threshold you can monitor for very weak targets.
3. The X70 has noise cancel which includes an auto-mode that searches for the quietest setting.
4. Notching, the X70 has finer notching resolution by far, meaning you have less chance of notching out goodies.

C. Coils...What are you searching for?

1. The X30 accepts the 7.5KHz coils only.
2. If looking for low conductors, brass, lead, gold the X70 can be fitted with the HF coils which are very sensitive to low conductors.
3. Likewise the X70 accepts the LF coil for searching for large deep objects and high conductors. I've personally found they ignore surface foil quite well, allowing a look through capability to see coins beneath the foil. The LF will also do better in highly mineralised ground as far as depth.

And then well there's the Prospecting Mode, which by the way can be used with the MF & LF coils, not just the HF coils for gold hunting. It is deeper than the Coin/Relic mode by a couple of inches on average.

So the question is are you in an area where you can utilize the features to your advantage? If not then and X50 is worth a look or another X30, just so you don't have to tussle over it.

I'm sure I missed something, but don't worry, someone will probably be along shortly to point it out.

Hi Bill,

OK, fine, make me feel small and inadequate with your incredibly great answers compared to mine!:please:

Truly, really good stuff. Your attention to detail is fantastic. It appears to me you are kinda sorta happy with your X-Terra. I've been reading all your posts to help me get back up to speed.

The 2 tone mode of the X-70 is the deal maker for me. 1 tone for iron and and another tone for everything else. Great for relic (and jewelry) hunting! :poke:

I don't recall who exactly, but I believe one of Napoleon's general's wrote him a three page letter, and in closing apologized for not having the time to compose a briefer communication.
