XT70 not working

bubber

New member
I have an XT70, using the 101/2 DD coil, using it in an old farm (hop field] I have all of Digger's things typed up, Setting all the things using his instructions, I have tried ALL METAL,, # ONE with factory preset for accepting and #3 accepting everything.I don't use factory presets. I put down coins and a gold ring, no matter where I set the sensitivity,,all of these things read all over the scale. and the sounds jump all over. I tried setting everything over and over, and it just doesn't work. When I 'm detecting I get sounds that jump all over the minus scale, sometimes a coin or other reading, that jumps all over..I sure could use some help. I am not new to detecting, been doing it for over 30 years, all with Mine Labs, Sovereigns, gold machines, etd. Thanks for any help.

There could be a lot of reasons:

1. As Phil mentioned bad coil.
2. Loose Coil connector.
3. Check your coil cover for dirt in their sloshing around.
4. You mentioned farm field, any electric horse or cow fences around? How about those buried dog fences?
5. Do you have any electronics on you? Cellphone, GPS? Is there a high accuracy GPS ground station set up by a farmer nearby?
6. Are there high tension electric lines nearby?
7. Is there a cell or microwave tower nearby?
8. Were there other detectors in operation?
9. Is the ground saturated with fertilizer?
10. Is the ground filled with iron?
11. Do you have the sensitivity maxed out?
12. Have you noise canceled?
13. Have ground balanced correctly?

Your coil didn't get submerged in water somehow did it? The 10.5 DD coil isn't waterproof. Also you don't detect with steel toe boots on do you, that can cause problems too. My guess is you have a coil problem, if the stock coil works fine.

I had a 10 1/2" DD coil that went bad and it was loose inside of the coil housing. It took out the main board in the control housing and ML replaced the coil and main board under the warranty. I could rock the coil back and forth sideways and hear a clunk as the coil in the housing slid back and forth. The X-70 was doing some weird things before it stopped working. Call Mine Lab.

Also try another completely different VLF metal detector in that exact same spot. See how stable it is in comparison.

Hi Bubber
I have the same thing happen every other time I go out with the 6", 18khz DD. Jumps all over the place. Won't stop screaming no matter what I do. Then suddenly, it stops and works fine. I've noticed it in 2 different locations but, both within 1/2 mile of each other. Then I'll go out to the same places another time and it works perfectly. There are some dish antennas around and microwave on the mountain. I'm hoping that's all it is. They're right, try another detector or go to a totally different location. Good luck. I'm going to follow your thread. I want to see how it turns out.

One thing about the unit itself(electronics), if you ever have to send it back for repair, it won't require a big package..

The detector only seems to beep over a target,(mostly old staples and wire} but the numbers jump all over, even if I lay coins down, the numbers go all over the place. I tried a concentric coil, it jumped around too, but not as many numbers.. We have pretty heavily mineralized soil here (wa state}

There has been a lot of good suggestions thus far. One other thing I would suggest would be to run some simple air tests with that coil. If you are able to lock on to targets in the air, and get a solid TID, then it likely isn't a problem with the coil or detector. It is more likely a problem with the settings you have or the soil conditions. Try some air tests and let me know what happens. Then do a proper set up and let me know what the ground phase setting is for that site. If the soil conditions allow for the detector to set up to neutralize those conditions, and it still jumps all over the place when you sweep, t is entirely possible that there are just too many targets under the coil at any one time to provide a locked on ID. I've hunted an old country school that did the same thing. There is literally a nail or piece of scrap every couple inches. The only success I've had there is to use the small DD coil, crank back the Sensitivity, run with a slightly negative ground phase setting and keep the coil an inch or two above the ground. Seriously, this place is that nasty! The depth of detection is adversely effected when I do all that. But the alternative is to simply not hunt those sites. And for me, that is not an option! Like I've said many times, if it were easy, someone would have already done it! It would be interesting to have you toss a quarter on the ground at that site and see if you can detect it with the coil 8 or 10 inches above the surface? I'd also wonder if you can hear lots of other targets in all metal, multiple tone? One last question on this go around, are you able to hunt this site with any other detector? If so, what is the make and model? Keep giving us information and we'll do what we can to figure it out. HH Randy

Digger: I haven't had a chance to get out and try these suggestions, But if I find a clear spot of ground, and lay coins down, it does the same thing, the numbers jump all over from low iron readings on up the scale.,But it doesn't do it all the time, only when it picks up a signal.. I appreciate all the suggestions, and will try them.

Bubber, Are you near Spokane? If yes, then shoot me a PM and maybe we can hook up, and compare Xterra notes. I will be way busy for the next week, but will get back to ya when things slow down.

Jeff

Still jumping in a clear spot of ground? If it does that when waving a target under the coil (air test), I would be fairly confident in saying that there is a problem with the X-TERRA as most of the settings will have no effect on that. You might try a factory reset, just in case the software didn't load properly at one time. If that doesn't take care of it, I'd suggest you contact Minelab USA and make arrangements to get it serviced. JMHO HH Randy

I was just ouside, and it still jumps all over the numbers. I came inside and tried it and it shows the right numbers just fine, it jumps a couple once in awhile like Diggers article says, , but other that it works fine in the house.

OK, let's see what we can figure out. When you're outside, are you adjusting the ground phase Automatically or manually?
