XT 70 silver?

UT

Member
I took a short trip up American Fork Canyon in hope of finding some gold, instead I think I found silver. All found with in a bout 50 yard in an hours time. It is non-magnetic and doesn't feel that heavy. Let me know what you think. Thanks

Interesting! Might be silver. Or it might be melted lead or melted aluminum. A "down and dirty" test you can do at home involves yellow mustard. Use French's yellow mustard because it has the highest sulfur content. Put a drop of mustard on the object and heat it with a lighter. When you heat the mustard, the sulfur molecule will combine with silver and make a very dark stain. (silver sulfide). You can remove the stain using vinegar. Best bet is to take them to a jewler or coin shop and have them test it for you. JMHO HH Randy

It's been quite a few years since I've been up there. Never tried detecting in the canyon, but have caught a lot of trout in that creek. I hope it turns out to be silver.

OK, I have a problem... I got my acid test, and now I am more confused. I first tested a 14k gold ring then a piece of steel and a silver ring, and the acids did what they were suppose too. I tested the metal on the stone first with silver test and had no color change, next I tested with the platinum acid and it had no change or reaction, so finally I tested it with the 18k gold test and nothing happened... It is to light to be gold or platinum, any suggestions please?

Looks like aluminum to me. Whatever it was it looks to be some sort of man made alloy that was exposed to high temps. Any sign of old houses, campfires, burned trees in the area? I see this all the time after house fires. (firefighter)

I found it about 8 inches down in a slow part of the river, no old houses, but camping spots...

Get a professional opinion from a good geolgist and/or assayer. Any reputable assayers or Universities with geology departments around your area?? (Let us know the results.)

Also in Coin & Treasure Mode in AM(All Metal) what TID number from -8 to +48 do each piece come up as on the XT-70 in an air test or on top of the ground?? (Preferrably with a Concentric coil which has a more accurate TID number than a DD coil. You can do that for all 12 pieces, one at a time starting with the biggest piece to the smallest piece. Let us know the results of this also.)

I find things like that every time that I take my detector camping, think that they are melted garbage.
