XT 70 and broken signals

New member
I have anXT70 ,with the stock coil, the10'5 inch DD, and the 6inch DD. I live on 5 acres that used to be an old hop field. It has a lot of junk, but I doubt, if there's any coins or jewelry. The large DD coil give signals with the numbers jumping all over the place. When I dig, I don't find anything. If I lay a coin, or gold ring,on the ground, the numbers jump all over, nothing is anywhere near consistant. I tried the 6 inch DD Today, found some junk (expected} with the iron mask set at 18 the junk would give a broken signal, but if I laid coins or a gold ring down, I got a good crisp signal.. I've used minelabs before, Sovereign, the16000, etc, never had this kind of problem. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Almost sounds like it could be ground balance, sensitivity too high, or a combination of both. Another thing you might look at are the batteries. It might help to describe the machines settings. I'm sure someone can give you better advice.

Good luck getting it resolved.

Also noticed tonite, The 10.5 inch 7,5 DD coil would pick a penny and a gold ring ,at about 6 inches in an air test, when I put it in prospecting mode, It would pick them up at about 12 inches in an air test.. which I realize doesn't always mean much.

Not intended to insult your intelligence, just have to ask, did you check in all metal or prospecting mode if the area you tested on was clear of targets? Did you notice any interference possibilities (really close power lines, transmitters)?

You can always hear a deeper targets in "true all metal mode" not "all metal discriminate mode" But you will be hearing every tiny piece of metal or minerals in the ground also.

Thanks for all the replies. I check for things in the ground etc, no powerlines around, I get a signal, maybe a 45, then goes to mabbe 30, then something else, then a -8 or -6, maybe find some junk, maybe a large staple or something, but the numbers jump all over . It's very frustrating. Seems like if the coil is held up 6 or 8 inches I get the high numbers, but when it gets down close to the ground, I get the minus numbers.

If your doing all the checking and right things and its jumping like that then it might be the coil itself mate. Even a program fault perhaps. I would for sure get someone to have a look at it.

You need to begin at the begin.

1. Start in an area with no targets of any kind and no electrical or radio towers nearby.
2. Leave cell phone & beepers in car/truck.
3. Use the stock 7.5KHz concentric coil to begin. DO NOT USE A DD COIL!
4. Coin & Treasure mode; Sensitivity=15, Threshold=0, Tones=4, Auto-Ground Tracking=Off
5. Auto Noise Cancel holding coil at waist weight out away from your body and no digging tools on or near you. Don't do it within 10ft of large metal object like your car. Coil should be parallel to the ground waist height.
6. In All Metal Mode find a 10ft x 10ft target free piece of ground.
7. Bury three different coins spaced 2ft apart at 4 to 6 inches deep in a flat horizontal position and mark them with poker chips, golf tees....etc. Make sure coins are NOT a clad coin!
8. Auto-Ground Tracking now = On and walk around swinging coil one inch above ground for ten seconds while avoiding targets. Is the detector quiet & stable? If yes proceed. If not find out why!....Deep iron....hot rocks....buried electrical lines....high mineralization...etc.
9. Swing over buried targets with a smooth consistent movement. "X" the targets from 90deg to center over them and you should get a consistent ID & solid/smooth audio. Vary your swing speed to see the reaction.

Once you are comfortable with the concentric then you can try the DD's. But re-Noise Cancel & re-GB Auto Track. The DD's act very differently and require you to modify coil swing speed and centering over target, to get a more consistent ID.
