xt-70 & 705

At a Siding

New member
Hi. I have used inexpensive entry level detectors for the past 2 years, and am ready to buy something better. Is the Minelab xt 70 and xt 705 the same machine? It is a little confusing to me. I am considering buying this, or perhaps a Garrett 1350 or 1500. Anyone have any ideas between the two brands? Thank you so much, really enjoy metal detecting, you never know what your going to find.... It's pretty exciting really... Ed

Hi Ed, I just recently purchased the 705. Somewhere either on this forum or on the web, I did see where someone had posted the difference between the 70 and 705. Can't seem to find it now. Here is my post about my first three week with the 705.

In the Xterra forum you are unlikely to find a bias towards the Garretts. I am sure they are good but most of those here like the Minelabs. The 705 has Ground tracking, beach tracking, Groundbalance offset in Tracking and Backlighting.

Does the 70 have ID stabilization?

yes, the 70 has target ID stabilization, but does not have a backlight or ground balance offset. if anybody is interested i have a less than 1 year old 70 with 3 coils for sale.

There are some minor differences that you as a coin hunter would not notice much difference. Get a used second-hand 70 like from HOWDY if you can, but if you are flush get a 705. They ARE both great machines.

Also look at a Minelab Safari as a great machine.

In my opinion do not get a Garrett 1350 or 1500. I had a Garrett 2500 and could not wait to get rid of it fast enough.

If I was buying new? I would opt for the 705. If for nothing else than the Warranty, IMHO, Beale.

Thanks for all of the response. It is very helpful to me. I will continue to research, hope to make a purchase sometime in the month of June...I am new to this forum, and am looking forward to learning. Also plan to share my finds...

The X-30, X-50 and X-70 were the first series of X-TERRA. They all received "enhancements" with the introduction of the 305, 505 and 705. As compared to the X-70, the 705 added a backlight, tracking GB offset, a fourth Pattern, a second mode of Pinpoint (Pinpoint Sizing) and a more sophisticated processor that allows for maximized depth and a faster reset between targets. I don't use the backlight much. But I do use Tracking GB offset and the Pinpoint Sizing feature. And do see an improvement in "detectibility" with the updated processor. HH Randy

Thank you, Digger, for the good explaination. I now have to research about how to groud balance and about this offset. I will do some googling tonight.

There might be some info on google. But in case there isn't, here is the link to my article on Understanding your X-TERRA. http://www.findmall.com/read.php?55,1153488,1153488#msg-1153488
You can also find it in the FAQFAQ section at the top of these posts. And, I am in the process of posting some videos that may help explain some of the things that are difficult to put into words. I have most of the videos ready. Just finalizing arrangements for a host site. HH Randy
