Hi, Guys!
Ya just picked onna my favorite topics...
Canadian coins drive many machines nuts. The exceptions are the Tesoros (as noted) and Teknetics. The Tek Mark 1 is probably the ultimate machine for hunting modern Canadian coinage. When approaching a dime, quarter, loonie, twonie, or one of the two types of (mostly) nickle 5 cent pieces, the audio will "ladder" up in a series of steps. We have a couple of guys in the club who make an absoloute killing with these machines: they get all of the "clad" Canadian coins, and ignore the pennies!
Having said that... you SHOULD be able to find them with the Explorer. Use the learn mode to make a discrimination pattern for the coins. Be aware that the signal will bounce from spot to spot on the display, but that's OK: you just have to take note of the spots that it's bouncing to. Once you have built your pattern, switch to the Edit mode and knock out the accepted areas in the far upper left hand corner of the screen. (this is to preserve sanity: there's too much iron trash in that area). The coins will still register in the rest of the pattern. Note that some of the accepted areas are inside the iron area (below 0 iron mask). When you go over a modern Cdn coin, the signal will bounce around inside the accepted areas. It'll probably sound like trash at first, but after a while you should be able to recognize the audio signature. I was eventually able to do that with my Eagle Spectrum: took me a few years, though.
Hope this post makes some sense... it's pretty late, and I could be rambling!
Good luck and HH!
