Jim, yesterday I was hunting my hay field where I found the dimes and tokens, a lot of junk, some tin? caps that sound just like a dime, I got over an area and the XS went completely quiet. no hum (is that null?) i took a dime (and a quarter) out of my pocket and passed the detector over it and it would not register at all, no sound as i passed over each coin and no cross hairs, yet when I moved to another area about 50 feet away it started operating again, I went back and sure enough no hum and no response on coins right on top of the ground, do you know what happened, usually if there is a large iron object or underground pipe the XS will just bubble or go to overload, in this case it just quit operating.

Ken,
I too have seen that happen and if you would have push the pinpoint button you would see there is a large piece of junk underground as you wouldnt have to go close to the ground and it would be sounding off.
I try this in several areas when I get a null and will lay a dime on the ground to see if it will give a signal and then try a quarter. Most time it will give a signal, but everyonce in a while it will not, even when touching the coil on top of the coin. I think being it is so big of junk that it nulls it out so bad that the coin will not give a signal.
I suppose we could have check it with a -16 iron mask and seen if it will give a deep low signal of the iron.
