xs depth mystery

i just got an xs. My dad has a tesoro cortes and a tesoro lobo st. We dug a hole, put a nickle dime, (silver) and a 40 grain nugget in each hole. Lobo was the deepest. around 10" on the nickle, and about 8 on the 40 grainer, mabey 11+ on the dime. the XS and the Cortes were both about two inches less on all three targets. The xs was in no disc. Full blast on the sens, and the ground was somewhat damp. No way could the xs get the nickle or the gold past 7.5" the threshold was fine , my question is, how do I set the XS up to achieve the depth that has been described all over this site. I am not knocking it, it looks totally trick next to the Cortes, which looks like a high school science project, I just want some of that legendary depth to get targets the tesoros can't get.
Thanks for the awsome forum.

Kevin run the sensitivity in the manual mode as high as you can and maintain stability. Set recovery to deep, and you might consider setting the response on audio 1. Audio 1 seems to pick up deep targets a little better. Also open up the discrimination, run in iron mask around -10.

up your gain 7-8 even more if you choose.the XS will get way more depth than that also put it on DEEP and when on DEEP slow way down and try 6 on the threshold and ferrous tones....HH Bri
PS also watch what you have checked and Xed because you can really work against yourself with these

Start finding targets that have been buried a while and see how your comparisions go. You have the best detector on the market, if it wasn't I wouldn't own two!

I have found pennys in softer dirt in a park at 17" that right 17" u will get tired of diggin, the only machine that I have seen that is even close on depth is the Shadow X5, I been using my xplorer for almost 4 months & I 'm just really starting to understand it Good luck with your xplorer...Chris In W.Georgia

I just went past that and the air test and the fresh buried and right to the settings I would not own them either and I have 2 also........... I just may have a 3rd xs by the end of this year.

a high school science project! Now that's funny but true. Laughed till I almost fell out of my chair! Good description though.
LOL, ArtWI

I may have to get rid of the C$ or X- to get another............ I aint findin nothing up here for months yet with all the snow and frozen ground ahhhhhhhhhhh but when I do get out there

I ran the XS wide open, iron to -14,cleared all the coin, jewlery and other boxes, gain at 9, sensitivity all the way up.
Now here is my next question, We spent all day up in the Bradshaw Mtns. in AZ.
I have a nice 40 grain nugget that I found with the Science Project( Cortes),But , using the XS with the same program, but iron around -12, the XS cant even see the gold half the time, when put it on a rock, or in some sand , Sometimes it beeps, othertimes it takes a pass, no signal at all, anywhere from 4 in away to right at the coil, it is both deep and fast in the options, This little Aussie jukebox may just need a tune up
Does it work better with AA's or the rechargable. I used AA's . New ones .
Thanks for all the advise.
PS. does anyone mke a prospecting coil for the XS. One that is proven to work better on gold.

haHaHA!!!!!....that's funny alright. It does have ONE thing going for it though (and so does Fisher) that I wish Minelab would implement, considering the vast sums of money that we shell out for their machines.
Does anybody care to guess what that ONE thing is???
But even without that one thing, I'm sticking with my Explorer, I've had more success with it than with all of the other machines that I've owned combined.

lifetime warranty Sarge. I just bought a Minelab Excalibur and a Explorer to go with my Fisher 1280X and Shadow X5 and sure would like a better warranty on the Minelabs! The only detector problem I've ever had that I couldn't fix myself was a bad tesoro coil once that was brand new. Other than that maybe I've just been lucky.

looks more like the metal detectors that they sell in Wal-Mart for 129.00 LOL stick with the best Explorer XS.HH all from frozen wisc

That with the Explorer, the longer an item has been burried the deeper it can detect it (as with most detectors, but more so with the Explorer). Now, go out and find a deep coin with the Explorer then try the other detectors on it. You will be suprised at the results.
Randy.
