XLT vs MXT/M6

Please bear with me on this one MXT people.....

I was able to pick up a XLT E series on a good deal last year (3 coils, good price) and used it for the last 1/2 of the Northeast season. I found a batch of clad and little jewelry, nothing to complain about at all. I was previously using a Prizm V, had a great time with it and looking back had about the same luck.

My problem is that I found that the XLT is smarter than I am. I do like some of it's (extensive) features but have absolutely no immediate or imagined future use for a fair amount of them also. From what I've been reading it sounds like the MXT/M6 system is much more of a turn on and get 'R done type thing which is what attracted me to the Prizm. Basically I get a few hours per week to run out after the kids are in bed to feed the local bugs and try to fund my future retirement. I don't have alot of time to try out different programs, tweak the electronic buttons and save things. The preprogrammed stuff on the XLT probably works fine for what I need but I wonder if there is more out there with a knob adjustable machine to adjust on the fly.

So here is where I ask for guidance, I started to consider (must be the below zero temps freezing my brain) putting the XLT package up for trade for an MXT/M6. I am a fan of the multitones (the XLT is freaking annoying as H**L on that one with it's 191 tones!) but not needed. I do like the VCO though. I have begun to appreciate the quality of tone from a single tone program though. I am mostly doing local areas for coins/jewelry but there are cellar holes around for potential exploring. I might be getting to the beach a few times this year as well. Any thoughts to talk me into/out of trading? This would have been a more simple question I suppose before the P6 came out with promised smaller coil as that is an attractive alternative also....

BTW thanks to all for informative postings as I've been randomly lurking for a bit

I can't say this enough, I like to coin hunt, relic hunt, prospect and beach hunt, with the MXT I only need one detector to do all of this type of hunting. Other machines don't offer three detectors in one, especially a turn on and go machine.........:detecting:..... I have used several different detectors and none of them compare to the MXT not even my Whites GMT.

I use the m6 over here in England and it's probably one of the easiest to use detectors there is.It is great on the beach(even on the wet sand)and it finds the smallest hammered coins we get over here with ease.....meaning it's very sensitive to tiny items.Because it's so sensitive to the small stuff it means it will find relics just as easy as it will find coins.Just because a machine has a relic mode it does not mean that it will find relics better than a machine that has not.The m6 has the same frequency, same recovery speed, same sensitivity and same ground tracking system as the mxt......and it will find anything the mxt will.

I really like my MXT for the same reasons you seem to be looking for. Very capable machine, yet easy to use.

Well I would like to see someone test it in the Gold fields before I would say that....................I have seen allot of detectors out there prospecting, but never seen or heard of the M6 being used. So that tells and showes me it wont do every thing the MXT will do.........:please:

I stand corrected Hillbilly Bob .....when i said it will find anything i meant in the coin and relic range.Unfortunately we don't have the opportunity to prospect over here so i could not say whether the m6 would be as good as the mxt for prospecting. If the mxt was better than the m6 for this purpose then indeed it would be the better all round machine. :surrender:

I agree Bob, The MXT does have an advantage (more sensitivity) over the M6 for prospecting because of the MXT prospecting mode. Other than than, both would fare about the same for relic and coin hunting.

The M6 is a coin shooter with power and has the 7 tone to boot and has beach mode these features will do very well for parks and fields and can run with the big dogs in most places.
Well can it find gold you bet will it find silver yes it can will it find coins like a blood hound so to me the key is the 7tone the M6 has the edge but the MXT is GB based md and true all metal mode
which can give the MXT the edge in sensitivity and depth

Thanks for all the input. I'm most likely going to make the switch if the right deal comes along.

Which ever one you choose I know you will be happy. They are both great machines.
