XLT, MXT, M-6 ????????

I have read so much over the last 2 weeks my head is swimming. I recently bought my son a (kids) bounty MD and together we have gone to the local football field and in 3 trips have found nearly $20.00 in clad and a silver locket and ring. I think I am hooked.... my son???? Anyway, I have decided to buy a "big boy" detector. I live in the Chicago area and will do most of my hunting in parks, lake Michigan beaches and for relics around old farm sites. I am interested in coins and jewelry. I have read about the frequency differences between the XLT and MXT/M-6. Is 14 or 6 MHz better for my desires? I have also read that the MXT/M-6 allows for more head variety... is that true and does it make a difference? I have read that the XLT is more complicated. Is it too much for a beginner? Finally, I called one of the well known MD dealers 2 times for advice and each time I got a different answer. Once the person at the other end said "buy the MXT... and another person at another time said buy the XLT. Finally, There is currently a special if I buy a whites, I can get a 12 inch coil. I have read that when detecting in parks etc, the smaller coil would be better. When I do but, should I get the 12" or a 5.3" coil as the extra?

Wow, sorry this is so long.... lots of questions.

I have used several units, I had an Mxt and use a M6. They are turn on an go detectors. U can't go wrong with either of these units. The xlt is pretty friendly and has turn on and go settings. The M6 is a good choice, it has 7tones, it's easier to go a little faster in parks with it vs the Mxt. The Mxt has other nice capabilities. I suggest you actually visit a whites dealer and try all 3. The xlt you will have a learning curve. The M6 is designed exactly for what you need. good luck. HH

I used an XLT until I bought an MXT four years ago and that is all I have used since. Both are excellent but the MXT became my favorite. I have been giving the M6 some thought but I just can't imagine I would like it over the MXT, but then again I thought the same about the MXT until I used it. I have also borrowed and tried some other brands but so far nothing has impressed me more than the MXT. Also, the 5.3 coil would be the best coil to add to your arsenal over the 12" for the type of detecting you describe.

Out of the 3 detectors you can't go wrong with the M6. Buy the 5.3 coil and leave it on except for relic hunting.

Any of the 3 are very good detectors
Take a close look at the M6 it is the MXT setup for coins
M6 is very eazy to learn and like the MXT very powerful.
The thing I most like about it is the 7 tones for coin hunting.
Put the 5.3 coil on the M6 you would have a coin killer.
I have some tips on www.firstontop.com you can look at and you are at the right site to ask for help.Good luck with any of the 3 detectors
ALL ARE VERY GOOD AND DEEP HUNTERS.
This is my main guns of choice.

I have an MXT and love it. I agree with everything mentioned above. I hunt a lot of parks and mainly use the 6x10 DD whites coil, it's a coin/ring hog. So I vote MXT with a 5.3 round coil and a 6x10 DD coil...you can't go wrong with that combination.

Thank you all for your advice and your long running discussions. I have decided to go with the MXT and the 5.3 coil as an extra. Can't wait to try it out. I will be heading to Daytona with the fam at the end of June if there is anybody there who would like to meet up and show me ways of the beach.

Same here :surprised:

I moved from there 3 weeks ago.
Be at the band shell BEFORE sunrise and cleanup on the 4th. night of celebrating. There will be gold in that sand.

I am still confused but I am leaning towards the MXT more and More:goodnight:

You can't go wrong with any of them. Pin the names up on the wall and throw a dart! Just don't miss.....

Get the MXT OR M6 .
I like the M6 for the 7 tones but the MXT is the big brother to the M6
JUST GET ONE OF THE DETECTORS AND GO HUNTING.

I agree with that one.....:pulltab:

He taht's inovative :nerd: I just hope I don't hit "She who must be Obeyed"
