XLT for nuggets?

AceHand

New member
Hi, yeah, I'm new at this. Decided to take up prospecting. Wanted a detector for nuggets. Gonna try panning and sluicing too. The MXT was looking good. A relative gave me an XLT to use for this comming summer. Here in Wyoming, there's gold, but I believe it's quite small flakes and such. Am I spittin in the wind using the xlt for nuggets? I'm sure a real gold detector would be much better, from what I've read. Could someone recommend some settings, or at least some tips on setting it up? From what I have read, I'll need to tweak the factory prospecting mode for better results. Really don't want to tell him to take it back, as I know it's an expensive, good detector.

Thanks, Tom

The good news is the XLT will find gold nuggets, the bad news is they have to be larger nuggets. The XLT is not designed to find small gold like a GMT. A few years ago I went prospecting with some friends here in Northern California, I was using an MXT and the others were using a GMT, Minelab Eureka, SD2200 and one was using a GP3000. No one found any gold except for the one person using the XLT. She just had her coil in the right spot and found a nice 1/4 oz nugget. In order to find the very small stuff I would go with a GMT if you are just going to prospect or an MXT for a multi purpose detector. The MXT will not find the flakes the GMT will but for me I don't care to find specks I can hardly see, besides I have found gold with my MXT as small as a match head. Good luck
