xl pro

I am new to detecting(4months or so) and I am using a whites xlpro. Love the machine so far and have found some cool stuff. I've only used it in the disc mode. In reading the manual I've learned that maximum depth can be achieved in the all metal modes. GEB/NORM and GEB/SAT. I've tried them and they will take some getting used to. Any tips or tricks from experienced users would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

when hunting in either of the GEB norm or sat mode you will get some electrical drifting. Hit the toggle up by the meter whenever the machine seems weird and that will reset the threshold and re-stabalize the machine, then you can get back to swinging that coil. These modes can be, well, tedious and troublesome to use, but will find deeper targets. I myself use the Geb-Sat mode as this mode constantly re-adjust itself, and you only need to 'toggle-it' half as often. I also experiment with locking the geb in when in those modes as that seems to help. I hunt primarily in Fla. and mineralization is'nt really a problem so the machine does ok. Having said all that I still use Geb-Disc. the most because there is just so much trash on our ground, People are trashy here it seems, and with limited hunting times I don't want to dig alot of unwanted items. I'm sure I've missed a few good items but thats the way it goes. Good luck with XLPRO, I'ts a great detector and you're gonna find alot of good stuff. H/H and good luck, Fred/in Fla.

Thanks for the tips Fred! I find plenty of trash here in Ohio as well!
I will continue to experiment and learn my new machine.

Try to obtain a copy of "Taking A Closer Look AT Metal Detector Discrimination" by Robert C. Brockett. Also, while not written for the XL Pro, you can get a free copy of "Fisher Intelligence, 5th edition" from Fisher Research Labs. Both are loaded with good, solid metal detecting advice.

When you get a few extra dollars to spend, you should consider purchasing a Blue Max 600 coil and a Blue Max 800 coil, especially if you will spend lots of time looking for coins. The Blue Max 600 coil will give you decent depth of detection while giving excellent target separation when hunting an area loaded with trash.

At this time, while you are still learning, do not spend much time on being concerned with achieving maximun depth of detection. What is important is learning how to adjust the XL Pro where it is stable operating in the ground conditions where you hunt. If you try to use too much Signal Balance, your XL Pro could become unstable with loss of depth of detection. Also, most coins are found at a depth of five or six inches. As you gain experience, you can adjust the XL Pro for maximum depth to locate the deep, deep coins that exist in many of the so called "hunted out" areas.

It is very important that you learn to use a good set of headphones. Headphones will enable you to hear faint signals better and save you money on batteries because batteries will last longer when using headphones.

This information should get you started in the right direction...enjoy your new XL Pro and I wish you luck in finding lots of treasure with it. Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas) :)

Thanks for the excellent advice Kelley.
Will regular stereo headphones work the same as some of the others that are offered specifically for metal detecting?
Thanks again for the help.

made for home electronic use, but just plug them into you XL Pro and see if they work. I do recommend using the best headphones that you can afford to buy. I happen to use the Grey Ghost Original headphones...I find them comfortable and they have never given me any problems. However, there are several top of the line headphones that are every bit as good as the Grey Ghost headphones. Try to locate a dealer near you that sells some good headphones and see if he will let you try some of them to see which one you like best. If your stereo headphones work, just use them until you get more experience under your belt. Again, enjoy yourself! Kelley (Texas) :)
