Xl Pro vers Classic 5ID Pro

I have been looking for a low priced upgrade i currently have a 4900d Pro and a 6000 DI pro but i left them at my summer place in WV. and am spending the winter in AZ.by the time i ship them and the costs involved a might as well apply that toward an upgrade instead....
i have been meaning to up grade the 6000 Di Pro but it has spoiled me.. i have had it 25 years and it still does grand. i know it is not as deep as some of the newer ones...but the analog is hard to beat!! i have been searching the net and forums.. and would like a XL pro but they have become pretty rare.. i can get a classic 5 id but was wondering in the real world how the two compare... i am trying to convince myself i would be happy with a classic 5 ID but maybe i should wait for a used XL Pro to show up??
how much would i gain with either over my 6000 DI Pro??
my 4900d is my back up, harder to set up but does more than the 6000...
any and all input would be appreciated

after reading Monte in another post it would be more accurate to say i bought both my 4900d pro and 6000di pro in 1985 22 years ago instead of 25 years ago..
time is passing quickly...so is my recollection

This is especially true of a 6000 Pro XL which was renamed simply the XL Pro. No change in electronic design. The use of the smaller, lighter-weight and better balanced slim-line housing made a terrific difference in comfort and detector controllability.

Also, the 6000 Di Pro saw several great improvements through the years, especially in the refinement of the AutoTrac circuitry. It didn't work so well on those first releases. The excellent analog display that the 6000 Di Series 3 and top models since then had used was one of the main things that made the 6000 Pro XL/XL Pro so loved by many loyal White's users. These were completely re-engineered models and not just the old electronics stuffed into a smaller housing. They wouldn't fit.

As for the Classic 5-ID Pro, this is a modified Classic ID with a 950 coil stock. The Classic 4 and Classic 5-ID were simply Classic II and Classic ID models that had some 'front-end' electronic revision necessary to make them operate at 8.1 kHz, like the Prizm series, and they use the Prizm coil designs.

While they can work okay, an the original Classic 5-ID w/8" coil that I evaluated worked good, I still feel there is some discernable difference, but I have used all the Classic series for years, extensively, and can hear subtle little variances. Also, there are only two coil sizes available for them ... 8" and 950. No smaller coils available.

These two models were made exclusively for Kellyco. I believe you can send them off to "Mr. Bill" Crabtree at Surfscanner Detectors and pay to have them modified, which can change them back to operate at the old standard 6.59 kHz, as well as the Threshold and Ground Balance modifications.

There is no real comparison between the XL Pro and Classic 5-ID Pro and your old 6000 Di Pro. There are some general differences, such as:

Thanks Monte that is the kind of info i was hoping for.. i now can make a wiser decision on upgrade....i have never been bothered by the weight or the bulkiness of either of the MD but then agn they are all i have ever used!!! Wife and i are both retired now and she want to join in the hunt..
Monte i bought both MD when they had just came out so they would be the early versions of both Pro models.. 1985...
i myself like the threshold type tone where u can tell a difference from weak, strong or broken sounds. i pay much more attention to the tone than the meter but my wife is the opposite..ive been watching ebay for a while not many idx or xl pro's go through there... i did see a 6000 di pro go for over $400 this week that is hard to believe!!! if i remember i paid new abt $450 for mine in 85...i have noticed all whites have held their value real well since abt 1985...
i will scan the auctions for a week or two and if i dont find a Xl i will get a refurbished 5ID and continue looking till i find a Xl... the hardest decision of all will be to release the grip on the old one's, man they have been so reliable!!!!
again : THANKS MONTE !!

best of luck in your very interesting search for the xl-pro!..if you can,try to hold out for a lightly used model, with the 6" coil..truly an outstanding instrument!
