XL-PRO /TR DISC.?

I was wondering if anyone uses the TR/DISC. mode on the XL-PRO? I heard it may be better in the trash because you can use a slower sweep speed with the 5.3 coil? Or any other spots to use or other modes that may work better than the GEB/DISC.? Thanks.

Yes! I sure do use TR/Disc on my XL Pro. It's great for use in heavy trash where the fast sweep required for GEB/Disc is too fast to pick out good targets in amongst tighly packed trash. The great secret about TR/Disc is that it is a non-motion Disc mode. You can crawl along at a snail's pace and still ID targets! The downside is that you lose a lot of depth if you use a lot of disc, but you can still disc out most iron and not lose too much depth. Or, you can set disc so low it only disc's out the ground, essentially ground balancing the detector as well as with GEB, but then it works like all-metal ... but target ID still works great. Or you can set disc for any combination in between for the balance of depth vs disc you prefer. I usually set mine for more disc. That way I still get down a good 3" or so but disc out most junk. In HEAVY trash where most other detectors are useless, I'll take 3" any day. You could get 6" with no disc if you prefer, or anything in between depending on how you set your disc control. TR/disc is one of the greatest secrets of the XL Pro. Glad you asked Harold!

Yes, I use TR/Disc. However, to be effective, you have to be in relatively mineral free ground. If you are able to GB with Sig Bal near maximum, then TR/Disc will get you more depth than GEB/Disc.
As an aside, if you are using a 5.3 coil, you can sweep slower in GEB/Disc than you would with the larger 950 coil and still get the same effect. Conversely, if you connect the 15 inch coil, you will have to swing it much faster than you would the 950 in order to achieve the same depth.

I'd be willing to bet that many readers of these forums are newer to the hobby. So new, that they might not really know what "TR-Disc." really is compared with the "Discrimination" on the detectors the use now. Especially confusing to some because what they use today IS operating in a TR principle, just with the added benefits of ground cancellation, and that requires search coil motion or sweep speed.

So, for newcomers to the hobby, 40 years ago we had either straight TR modes of operation - or - TR-Disc. operation where we could increase the Discrimination level to reject unwanted trash, such as some problem iron, lower-conductive foil, bigger foil, and on up to pull tabs. The common problem targets we encountered.

Most of those early conventional TR-Disc. models operated at

They made a 4in head for that model and the hotrock mode is great in trask and klinkers (coal klinkers) to picking out the coins in the trash shortribs
