XL-PRO/G.B.?

I was wondering if any here who use the XL-PRO in GEB/DISC. use manual Ground balance and lock it instead of auto? In the manual it doesn't mention using it in any mode except TR/DISC.I'm trying to sqeeze a little more depth as it is lacking to me ,But the ground here is pretty dry. Thanks.

In theory, locking your GB in manual could get you extra depth if the auto balance doesn't work well. However, by the time the XL Pro came out, White's pretty much had auto GB figured out. The chance that the soil conditions will change while your GB is locked in for a different area is great enough that you are more likely to lose depth in manual than in auto.

Thanks for the reply. You have to be in the rite area with these detectors like old baseball Fields and other open area's. But man are they fun to use!

'Lock' the GB setting (or have GEB Trac turned 'Off').

Harold, the 6000 Di Pro SL's and 6000 Pro XL and renamed XL Pro models can only be adjusted for Ground Balance in the GEB All Metal mode or GEB-Disc. mode by using the Air sample and Ground sample method. The "manual" GB technique is only functional in the TR-Disc. mode, and then that only achieves what would be an All Metal accept setting since only the ground signal is 'discriminated.'

As a4wdguy mentioned, the Auto-Trac function was much improved in the latter version (CB circuitry) 6000 Di Pro SL models as well as the newer engineered 6000 Pro XL and XL Pro model. By "improved," I mean they tracked better and updated the GB setting better, and the 'Lock' function worked great, compared with their early release in '85 where the 'Lock' ... didn't lock-and-hold.

But, they are not a fast-acting Auto-Trac system like the current M6 and MXT Pro models. Instead, it requires a good number of side-to-side sweeps of the search coil over mostly bare ground to read, analyze and update a functional GB setting. Depending upon the ground mineral conditions, it could require 10-12 or more sweeps over target-free ground. My personal desire is to try and get a very slightly positive Ground Balance, then 'Lock' and hold that setting. Usually can accomplish that by selecting some of the more mineralized ground in the area, and that might mean some exposed rock or ???

I then might have to do several Air and Ground toggle sample maneuvers to get what I want and then 'Lock' the setting. I have also done the regular Air/Gnd procedure, then used the Auto-Trac function and sweep the coil about the area, especially any more mineralized ground, and make a successful number of sweeps to get the GB I want. That would be either 'spot-on' or ever-so-slightly positive, then I stop the sweeping and toggle to 'Lock.'

I like to be more in control of a detector, especially the GB and how it is set for the sites I hunt, and that means I like it set right on or just slightly positive. I keep my MXT Pro and 6000 Pro XL models in the 'Lock' setting all the time, and I have Auto-Trac turned 'Off' on my XLT and VX3 as I just use the prescribed GB methods for each of those models, and maintain the GB setting achieved. If the ground mineral conditions change, I will update the GB for any model in hand.

I read some where not to scrub the coil as it will effect the G.B.? I scrub the coil on all my detectors?

Harold, I used to sometimes scrub a coil, with the old TR's or a VLF/TR-Disc. when in the Disc. mode, but never with a modern detector in either the All Metal or motion-Disc. mode.

The Owner Manuals generally suggest we keep the coil an inch or two off the ground, and YES, it's due to how the ground mineral conditions can swamp or overpower the EMF closer to the search coil. That can result in overload, falsing, impaired detection, etc.

And, now you've gone and done it. You mentioned the XL Pro and I was already to head out and hit a site with a different model. I'm going to sign off and head to a tree-filled, large but shady park and fire-up my XL Pro. Dang, White's sure has kicked out a lot of really good detectors in the past fifteen years or so.

Just give 'em both a try and let us know your observations.

Good Luck,

Will do as soon as this rain lets up. They say rain off and on all week. Hate to get this baby wet as it is a true closet queen! It was only used twice then the battery's were taken out and it was stored in a closet. The owner even still had the original box!
