XL Pro finds Powder Flask & stirrup

I a thr

Got out today to a new spot. It was over a half mile from any road and in a timber that once housed a stage station, brothel and a livery station. Plus a couple home sites which I don't believe we found yet. I usually coin hunt as SW Iowa didn't have any Civil War sites. Today turned out a little different as I uncovered my first ever POWDER HORN!! also dug a stirrup, a horse shoe, a boot toe saver, and many pieces of lead shot. I also found a copper coin about the size of a large cent but not as thick. Still trying to clean it up to identify it. Anyone able to give info on the powder horn or stirrup?? The powder horn has eagle and US surrounded by a bugle.

The powder horn looks to be Civil War, as guys from Iowa fought in it in a Regiment called the Army of the Tennessee, if I remember right. I found a heart shaped horse rosette from the CW here in NH, so the things used in that war traveled back home. That powder horn is a great find, although a little beat up... better than some I've seen. You found a good spot there and with all the activity at that place, you should be finding Seated coins along with coppers. The copper you found is most likely a large cent, some come out looking great, others just a smooth disk from handling. Good luck in there, those are the kinds of things that make this hobby worthwhile. Ron

that the powder flask was made in 1832 - 1833 and only 3450 of them were made. So it predates the Civil War a few years. Also the coin turned out to be a Hard Times Token 1837. They were produced as coinage was in short supply.
Thanks for commenting.
