:hot: I got out today with my brother, Digger, and we went to an old church site. This site is really old for my part of the country. I live in SW Iowa and unfortunately thing don't date back much past 1850 around here. Until today my oldest finds had been 1853. Last summer I found an 1853 Seated Half an 1853 Seated Dime, and 2 years ago I found an 1853 3cent piece. These accounted for my oldest finds in 33 years of detecting. Well, today I found a beautiful 1841 Seated Dime. The church site is now a cornfield as the church was used as a slave running spot prior to the Civil War and was burned to the ground in the early 1860's. I also managed to find an Indian penny and several old buttons. and a couple what zits. Digger also got an old Indian penny and a copper coin I think its date was 1857 but unsure of what it was until he gets it cleaned up. What a thrill, love looking for old coins guess we need to go back east where thing are older.

We have the same problem here most of the old coins don't go past the 1850 mark. Unless one is lucky enough to find a reale.

Hi Bill this is Rahoo Roger Rea I lived in FT. MADISON IOWA for 44 years. We moved to Madison Heights. Virginia in November things here date back to 1692 should be a thing or too lost around here. Good Luck. Rahoo

GREAT FINDS.nice silver and cool buttons.Check the back of your buttons you may be quite surprised to find that there may be writing on the back giving you info on where it might have come from and time frame.I do my detecting in southern New Hampshire and find quite a few old ones, some with writings some plain but always an adventure.I have been doing an old settlement in an area that has almost been forgotten by humans. The newest coin 1827 oldest 1777 coppers only so far. They are out there,it just takes patience and a little luck.ENJOY

Let me tell you, it is not easy here in the North East. We have so many people in NJ that it is rare that someone has not beat you to an old school or church site. Half the time I am lucky if I leave with a hand full of clad!

I was thinking of going out your way where there is less competition!

I guess the grass is always greener...

Most all of the obvious spots have been pounded. You really have to do allot of research to find a good hunting spot even in IOWA.
