XL Pro, do you auto track or lock?

Running auto track, it seems like when I set the detector down to dig, then pick it back up, the threshold either nulls or is louder for a few seconds after putting the coil back to the ground. If I lock it, the threshold is steady (as expected).

I'm wondering if it may make a little bit of a difference in the second check of a hole I pulled a target out of if I run auto track and don't wait for it to track again to the ground before a second check of the hole? Also, does anyone know how much the auto track will adjust things relative to the initial settings established with the two step set up of coil raised then coil lowered? (I think the manual says step3 and 4 ... as in if you change Sig Bal repeat step 3 and 4).

If I pick the detector up, pinpoint and raise and lower the coil when I have a louder threshold, I don't hear a large change, so I don't think the tracking moves that much while I dig ... but it does seem to move some.

Any thoughts?
and thanks!

It will track your target just like the ground. I set mine and lock it. I rebalance at times, but my ground here is very nice to me, so Im lucky. I definetly would not run tracking in a nasty, or as Monte would say, target rich environment. From what Ive read, it has a decent tracking circuit but isnt as good as the newer White machines like the MXT,M6,DFX etc. Like you have noted, if you are tracking the ground, listen to your threshold. I mainly use the SAT mode, sometimes the disc mode. Hope this helps.
BTW, love my XL Pro.

John
PS: I also use Hot Rock Reject

with an XLT I generally have Auto-Trac turned 'Off.'

I prefer to set a 'proper' GB, or one that is just slightly positive with a White's, then Lock or disable the tracking. While you won't have much of a problem with the Auto-Trac circuitry 'tracking' to desired targets (non-ferrous), it will track to iron and other ferrous-based stuff. Thus, most of the time I bypass tracking during the search.

Thanks John and Monte.

I am finding that the XL Pro does a very good job of telling me what is iron. Every thing I have dug that I thought the XL Pro was saying was iron has been. My other detectors are not always so clear on the iron identification.

With the XL Pro and 600 coil I have now covered where the clothes line and old path to the old shed were in my yard. I found a screw cap that I missed previously in this area but that's about it; besides verifying there is a lot of iron. Was hoping to find that I had missed some silver but so far it looks like I did a reasonable job of covering this area with the CZ's, Cibola and Tejon.

XL Pro balances very well and makes swinging it easy. Am enjoying learning the XL Pro. Now, if the thunder storms clear I can get back to it!
Thanks again!
