XL Pro and relic hunting

Bowie

New member
I am sure some of you have used your XL Pro for relic hunting. What coil do you use and why? Would the 9.5 be better for this? I mainly use the 5.3 Bullseye now for coin shooting in trashy places. I have both the 9.5 and 8 inch coils but I never use either of the two. I hunt mainly in SAT mode.
Or maybe I should order a 10 inch DD coil for my M6 and use it.
I have a chance to hunt some civil war era sites and dont know what to use. The gentleman that invited me to hunt with him uses a Tejon.
Maybe I should be asking on another forum but I am thinking I would get more info on the XL Pro here.
I dont think the soil will be a problem as it is in the Mississippi Delta close to where I am now.
Thanks

Bowie, I'm like you I really have developed a liking for the 5.3 coil. I also never use my larger coils. I guess the depth thing would be the concern. What kind of depth do you need to get and that would answer your question. All I can say is that I found a copper powder flask a couple years ago at a good 14" with the little 5.3 coil and the meter said it was a high quarter. Turned out to be a powder flask that was contracted to the Government in 1832. I don't have the opportunity to hunt old battlefields here in Iowa but do find some old Dragoon relics.
Keep us updated on your success.

Depth, I wouldnt know as I have not relic hunted. Coin shooting has been my limit thus far, just havent found or should say, gotten permission to hunt on a spot that would be a good for relics. I guess that could be a loaded question because you can find relics coin shooting and vice versa. But as far as depth, I wouldnt know. So far just coin hunting I have only found a couple deeper than six inches and most I find can be anywhere from one inch to five using either M6 or XL Pro and the 5.3 inch coils. I have to hunt in places that are in the publics eye so I dont dig everything, hoping that will protect our hobby. I like hunting in all metal with the pro and very little disc with the M6. I hear so much and wanna dig a lot of it but I dont, I dig a repeatable tone or locked on id. Im working on a couple sites.wish me luck , I need it.
I got an invitation to hunt a war site and old plantation site, all fields now and became concerned what to do, The gentleman that invited me uses a Tejon and he told me he finds some deep articles. So I became concerned about depth and ground coverage. I may just use the M6 and the 9.5 coil.
Anyways, thanks very much for your reply,

Before I decided to not take the Pro I would consider putting the 9.5 coil on it and take both of them. I'm sorry but I have had 3 XL Pro's and learned the hard way that they are my top choice. Over the past couple years I have had or tried just about every detector out there and keep going back to the XL Pro and the Minelab Advantage. However I just added an older Fisher CZ3D, another analog, to the herd and have hopes it may live up to everyones testimonials. It supposedly has some great depth, time will tell.
Good Luck on your decision.

Hi Bowie.
For relice hunting I use my XL PRO on TR DISC mode, with the disc just above "salt", only nulling out little nails.
In low mineralized soils it is the best mode in my humble opinion.
The 950 coil is perfect for that kind of search.

The XL Pro and Advantage will cover just about any type of hunting situation out there. They are my favorite detectors. I've been using my IDX Pro with Mr. Bills mods. lately also. This is another really good detector that I will be keeping. I don't see a need to use any other detectors than these three. They fit perfectly for the type of hunting I do.

Ive never used or experimented with the TR Disc. I mainly use the SAT and check in disc, when coin hunting. And Ive never used the 9.5 coil.
Seems, and I may be wrong, probably am,lol, that Ive read somewhere that the TR mode was good for difficult soil and I know you said it was good for mild soil and I am pretty sure thats what Ill be hunting in,mild soil.
Thanks for the replys and help,
John

If you are going to use the TR mode, only use the disc knob to adjust to the correct ground balance.
If the ground you are detecting has any minerals in it, adjusting the disc control more than for GB will adversely affect depth (TR mode). It is in the manual about this, it cannot GB and discriminate at the same time unless you are in neutral sand or some ground similar.
