Xcal coil cover

I know a lot of the dirt diggers want the coil covers or use bed liner and epoxy as a replacement. The coil on my Explorer is very durable, but i opt to keep a cover on it when dirt digging. Now on a beach where you are constantly having to clean it i dont. My question is about the Xcal. Their coils seem very fragile in comparison so i dont know about going coverless. I always clean the detector after every hunt.... which has been almost every day for a month or so now. I noticed yesterday there was a small crack on the cover... looks like from taking it on and off. Ive had the unit a little over a month would you order a new cover, go without a coil cover, or use the same method of bed liner or epoxy? The beaches are pretty sandy here on the Gulf, but at low tide and in the water can have a lot of shells. I know you can SEAL the coil cover to the coil, but im not kean on that. What do you guys feel about this coil and the possibility of damage?

Coil covers are a novelty item. Beach hunting with a coil cover on is asking for aggravation. You can take your cover off to clean it out , but eventually it will become loose fitting. From being pried or develop a crack. The Excal II has a Tornado coil. I really don't know why you consider the coil to be flimsy. I have numerous Tornado coils for my Sovereigns, and I use no covers. Bed liner spray for me. Once a year touch up. You save nothing in resale value. Your Excal is used. A Used Excal with a nice bottom of the coil brings no extra money in resale.

Goodmore have you used an SEF coil? I guess im used to those.... made for heavy duty work. Ill bust out the bed liner spray and toss the cover. My worry was ive heard people with Xcals having trouble with cracked coils..... and its not like a changeable coil on the SE. Use it, abuse it, toss it, and get another...... takes some effort to replace the coil.

$450.00 to replace new coil and cable is what was said on another forum. Do it yourself WOT $265.00. Coil cover $11.00. Sand is hard on coils. I clean mine often but very few times because of falsing from sand. Rubber tool dip now comes in a spray can. I sprayed the backs of my scoops and it is much better than bedliner. May work on coils but I have'nt tried it yet. Good luck with your decision. HH :minelab:

The thickness of the factory epoxy is pretty thin at the bottom of the Tornado coil. Doesn't take much wear to expose wire's in the coil or chip the outer, plastic shell. I'd just get a new cover......done!

$450.... pricy. Thats an expense im trying to avoid. Finding a product that can be built up and durable is the trick. Bed liner is tuff stuff. How about shoe goo or some kind of marine stuff? OK time to do some internet research for products that dont contain some form of metal in them.
