X70 What am I doing wrong....

Dang

Active member
I did everything by the book. But after 2 hrs of detecting it dawned on me... I'm not finding any deep coins. So....

I dig a 4"-5" plug in the ground. I place a dime in the bottom of the hole and replace the plug.
Move the coil over it and the X70 can barly pick it up and the VID can't lock in on it. What tone I did get was broken and muddied.
I played around and used auto/manual GB, track, noise cancel, less sensitivety, more sensitivety. But nothing seemed to help.
Tried this a few times at different spots with still the same reaction.
Is this minelab in need of repairs?

If you hadn't already posted that you were able to dig coins at 8-inches previously, I'd also question the detector and/or coil. But you indicated it did find some deeper coins at one time. So apparently it worked earlier. Don't misinterpret me. It may still be a problem with the detector and/or coil. But fill me in on a bit of information, if you would. What coil are you using in this test? Did you check the ground for other metal objects prior to burying the coin? What is your GB reading at these spots? What mode are you hunting in? If Patterns, what notches are accepted and what is rejected? How many tones is it set for? Again, I don't doubt your concern. But let's try to figure out if something else is going on before you ship it back to Minelab. HH Randy

Detectors don't like freshly buried coins. Try digging a 4 or 5 inch hole again. But this time push the coin in the side of the hole as far as you can. This puts the coin in undisturbed soil. Then put some water in the hole and pack the soil back in layers. Then try to get a beep. It's still not as good as a seasoned coin. Make sure you have checked for any metal within 1 foot of where you place your target.

I think you're confusing me with another X70 newbie Randy, But you're right about it working properly before. I'll try these and other suggestions along with a different location to see if I can get some real depth..

I went out again today at a different location and I just set the sensitivity real low. Right down to "Beginner" level. I turned on the "Track' so I wouldn't have to worry about if I have the ground balance right. What else.....did the noise thing automatic. In other words I ate some humble pie and decided not to try to use this detector like I;m a real pro or something. Doing this, although I didn't find any deep coins, I did find some trash at amazing depths so I guess.........Never mind!
This machine will take me a little time to get use to. And actually, for having only taken it out three separate times, It'd doing rather well.
Thanks for your tips guys.
