X5 V XS

Probably not many here that have used the X5, so probably wont get many replies.. I see a few that have switched to the X5 from the XS over on the shadow borad.. I might eventually give one a try.. One thing I am sure of before trying it though, is even if it equals the XS in depth for about the same price.. you still get the extra features with the Explorer.. I guess alot depends on your hunting needs.. I feel the explorer can work well everywhere, or at least everywhere I have tried it... I think if one of your need is hunting trashed parks and house yards, you would want the ability to ID targets... If your hunting sites where everything gets dug than maybe the shadow would be your choice... My maiun concern besides good ID is ability in iron without having to dig much of it.. Only reports I've got from Shadow users here is they were spending way too much time digging iron, but then again that was before the change in design, so maybe that helped.. Kind of wish someone did have one here we could compare in cellar hole iron

I just sent mine in for the mod., but have found they both have their stong points. I won't go into what they are and make a lengthy post. If you can just afford one machine, I would go with the Exp., I like tone ID and wouldnt kick the meter out of bed. It's a bear to swing all day and the X5 is a pleasure to swing. I have two years with the Exp. and only 2 months with the X5, so I'm still partial with the Exp. probably. HH

Have you done any IN the ground depth tests Houndawag and if so which one came out best?

I have had the XS for almost 6 months now and the X5 for only a few weeks. I love them both!!! The X5 is hard to get use to not having a meter, but on the other hand I think I wouldn't have the 1850 Half Dime I got Saturday with the XS because there was a 2" square nail within 2 " of the coin. I mainly use the meter as I am not able to differentiate the different tones well enough to tell silver from other signals. With the X5 I dig all repeatable signals with the disc set at around 4. I won't get rid of either, both have their place in my hunting arsenal!
JMHO! Tony

have noticed the X5 will find much smaller targets, especially "small gold". The Explorer I feel goes a "hair" deeper. Sorry, if that info doesn't help you decide on a purchase. One thing to consider is you'll probably get an X5 quite a bit cheaper, especially with the Exp. price increase(with no improvement). There have been quite a few of both up for sale on the forum and Ebay. HH

I have both the X5 and the Explorer XS and the X5 loves small items and has respectable depth, dont know if it goes deeper than the Explorer, but feel I have dug less nails with the X5 than I do with the XS.
Both of these detectors take some time to get to know it with the XS has alonger learning curve, but feel the XS will give you more info than the X5. The X5 I can swing it faster than the XS and check out area faster too..
I plan on keeping both detectors along with my Sovereign and for strickly coin hunting in parks the XS will be my choice with the tone ID.
By the way Houndawgg i wonder which detector i should bring out to NJ when I come?? Maybe both the XS and the X5. I will E Mail you when I know more.

that you actually dig alot of nails with the Exp... If I said I dug 10 this year I would be pushing it.....Its not like I dont hunt in iron.. most of my sites are loaded with nails.. Do you run in ferrous mode?

Jim,
I tried both the Ferrous and the conductivity and found in Ferrous some of the coins next to trash had a low tone and not high like a coin would be. I found this out while hunting with a guy that run iron mask at 0 (thats right 0) while I run at a -12 and he got a good high pitched signal of a coin and I couldnt, but got a low pitched of iron untill I switched to conductivity and then got a high pitch of a coin.
The nails I get are like a deep coins signal and they are iffy and sometimes I get them in 3 of the 4 ways I come at them, but most are too good of sounding swinging over the target to leave.
I run the new 5 inch Excelerator of Kellycos last week as a site full of nails and other trash and all I got in a hour were rusty nails with these realy sounding good, but most were the bigger square nails that do fool the Explorer.
I have another guy here having the same problem, but said he has too also dig a lot of nails to get the good deep coins as one he thought was another nails was a 1850 something half dime.
It may be a differnt area that too make a difference as the GTI 2500 I tried also just loved rusty nails along with the CZ7, the one I get very few with is the Sovereigns.
I was out on the beaches of NJ last Feb and couldnt beleive how nice the Explorer will work out there and had a nice threshold I dont get here. I would go over a nail and knew it right away.
Some of my problem is my hearing and some is if I think it is iffy I will dig to make sure. Some of these nails are over 10 inches deep too and just dont want to take the chance it could be a coin.

Friend of mine and myself went to the local fresh water lake beach to test the X-5 against the Explorer XS. Targets are few and far between. We started hunting away from each other....then we'd signal and compare targets. After an hour...we were both finding the same ole stuff. Shallow coins and tabs and such. I finally got a really faint signal with the Explorer that went almost off the board in the upper right of the Explorer screen. When he checked it with the X-5...he didn't get any signal at all. We turned his discrimination down to "1" and still no signal. I told him something was wrong...am not really familiar with the X-5...but he had it set up for "beach" or something like that. When the controls were set to "normal"...he picked the signal up loud and clear. He did ask me how deep it was....and I said to dig it up yourself and find out. Ended up being a 1965 quarter !! I was impressed with the LIGHTNESS of the X-5. HH Jake

I was hunting the other week on one of my most productive sites and it had been raining heavy for two days before I ended up putting my iron mask full on and drped my sens right down to 8 and I was getting loud clear top right signals which where IRON! it really sickend me I tried every tweek and still it banged the iron on the top right of the screen thats why I have had enough and looking at the DFX or X5 as I would sacrifice a couple of inchs for less iron and a more stable ride.

Trying to sell one Sov, so bring your X5, since I have backups, LOL. My X5 just came back today with the mod., so hope to learn it a lot better over the winter. Man, I've been watching your ND temps, burrrrrr. Stay warm
