X-Terra Target ID for US coins.....

The little brown truck arrived with my X-70 this afternoon. Although it was too late in the day to do any serious coin shooting, I have spent a couple hours reading the manual, tracking through my coin garden and passing a couple hundred old coins under the coil. I tested the same coins on the X-30, X-50 and the X-70. In each instance, I used the same 7.5 kHz coil on each detector, to minimize any differences created by different coils. You will note that some coins gave more than one visual ID. This is because, as I found with the X-30 and X-50, different coins read differently. For example, I found seated liberty dimes that read 36 on the X-70, and I found others that read 38. I found one seated liberty and two Barbers that read a 36 passing in one direction and a 38 while passing in another. The dimes that gave this "mixed signal" are indicated by 36/38.

This chart is not to be considered a complete display of what coins might be in the ground, in your neck of the woods. Varying soils will produce varying readings. As well, target masking will cause numbers to vary. But, for those of you getting started with any of the X-Terra models, this chart may provide you with information to help you determine when to dig! HH Randy

Randy,
These test's are similiar to those that I have. It is nice to know that my compiled information matches yours. I used same test targets as used on the 50 and 30.

It is always a good comparison to use the same targets.

I noticed that the common coins happen to fall on the same numbers as the X50. With this if you have used the x50 the last couple on month's those that may switch will have an easy time rememebering the target ID numbers.

I for one have noticed many but not all, Zinc cents are falling at 30. What has your test shown on this?

Joe, I agree on the 30 reading on zinc cents. I only tested a half dozen zincs, but what I found is that everyone of them hit at 30 on the X-70 and X-50, and 32 on the X-30. Coincidently, some of my IH cents also hit at 30 on the X-70 and X-50, and 32 on the X-30. The "pre-zinc" memorials hit 36. So, I guess my thought would be to not pass up a reading of 30 (or 32 on the X-30) thinking it is another zinc. At least not if you are hunting an area that may give up an Indian Head cent. Reading the same as a zinc cent may just be the reason that old IH is still there! HH Randy

do a air depth comparison on the 70 and 50? Did you check the ID's on any gold jewelry? Just trying to get a feel for the 70, I know what the 50 will do in the field and really like it's performance. Let us know how you do with the 70 out in the field. HH John

Not yet. I want to get comfortable with the operation and settings of the X-70 before I make any "hunting" comparisons between the three models. I hope to do some extensive testing this weekend and will try to document the numeric displays of some gold jewelry as well. Lots of variables with sizes, shapes, purity and alloy. But, we have to start somewhere! HH Randy

Well done Digger.

Even over here:ukflag: those comparisions are very well worth noting.Thanks.:thumbup:Jerry.
