X-Terra Sounds of Gold

Hungry

New member
Just purchased a second hand X-TERRA 70, [hasn't arrived yet ] to compliment my EXPLORER SE. I have never been gold detecting before, and was wondering what sort of sound you get in relation to Australian $1 - $2 coins. I spoke to BT quite a long time ago, and he thought the Explorer was not good for gold, so it has taken a lot of walking to find enough money to buy the X-Terra, I hope this thing is as good as he reckons it is

Well I do not have your answer onthe "sound of gold". I will say the X-70 is a great machine, and give you a congrats on getting it, HH, Beale.

In my estimation Explorers really suck up silver coins but indeed never thought it was a super nickle unit or gold ring unit...Time to do some air testing on those Australian coins. Certainly no gold nugget hunter but read where if you tape two U.S. nickles together gives you a ballpark idea..Never felt the Explorer was made for gold nugget hunting but on the other hand X-terra 70 is a multi facetted unit and heard some good feeback on it relative to being used for gold nuggetts.Personally if it was me and was going to do a lot of gold nugget hunting Minelab makes a exellent nugget detector. Minelab makes some nice units but I think you are going to like the versatility of the X-terra 70 and especially its light cosmetic design and user friendly operation and of course any question the forum is very friendly and will help you out if you hae any questions and congragulations on your new unit..

You will probably find your new 70 will be in your hands alot more then your SE once you get the hang of it, its a great machine. As far as sounding goes on gold......well that all depends what mode your in and what tone you are using. My advice to you is to invest in good quality headphones.

Cheers!

Hi Hungry,
Just to give you an idea these nuggets are around a gram in size and using patterns 1 and 99 tones accepting signals from non-ferrous targets.

Looking from left to right at the nuggets the first one come in at 4 the middle one at 18 with iron stone in it and the last at 6.
If you were prospecting mainly using prospecting mode with a low iron mask a great advantage with the 70 is to put it into ground balance and leave this display on the screen and bring up tracking and as you sweep just keep your eyes on the ground balance numbers. If the numbers are lower this means higher mineralisation, so this gives you a good chance of finding good gold bearing gound.

As to our decimal currency in patterns 1 our 5c =8, 10c=12, 20c= 20, 50c= 24, $2=30, $1= 32. If you get a 50c piece with a dollar lying on top of it you will get 26-28. Also their are many targets that fall right on any goody so you do have to check any of them out as you would have found out using your se.
I can gurantee you will be using the 70 more times than explorer it is a great versatile bippa.

Regards Pinpointa.

The signal for gold is quite bold and shrill in Prospector Mode on the X-Terra 70. In regular Treasure Mode, the $1 & $2 coins have a specific value which may change depending on the angle of the coin. I find that in Prospecting Mode, the X-Terra (when coupled with the Eliptical DD coil) gives a VERY strong signal on tiny nuggets near the surface. Quite a high pitch, similar to an extremely strong Iron object near the surface.

Someone pointed out to me that people loose lots of Aussie $1 & $2 coins... because the $2 coins don't make a metallic "clink" then they hit the ground. On soft surfaces, they actually sound like plastic and don't bounce much. Hence people loose them without realizing.

Like your advice from BT, I too was recommended the X-Terra 70 over the other models. There's just so many more benefits in it (weight, battery type, features, weight etc). It has an easy learning curve.... but I had to write down a couple of the settings and carry the paper with me to remind me of what I needed to do for the first day (for noise canceling and ground balancing etc) I'm guessing you'll love it if you like both coin and nugget hunting!

Thanks fellas, I didn't know if the sounds were high or low, thanks for the info on the sounds and the readouts, i'll print it out and take it with me. Can't wait till I get it. HH Bob.
