X-terra rain and dust cover?

Dirty Nails

New member
I notice that the Minelab cover is $42.00. Is it that much better than the Sunray, which is $22.00. . I hunted for years and years and years with my old White's 5900 Di pro s/l with just a plastic bag over the meter, if it was lightly raining. If it wasn't raining, I didn't use any kind of cover, even in heavy dust. It still works just as good as it did the day that I took it out of the box. I am not willing to chance the x-terra to our summertime dust. I want to protect it if I can. Those of yall that are in the know, please fill me in.
Thank you,
Rickey

Depends if the Minelab cover is old stock or made within the last 8 months or so Rickey.
They used to be a decent enough cover and I guess not so pricey here ($32)....but the quality of them has been downgraded lately. They are tighter and thinner now causing a fold-in of the inside stitching ribbing which rubs the front panel and can turn a 705's power button on and off as well as the backlight button.
The hole for the coil plug is smaller now too and needs to be cut a few mm rounder. The coil plugs screw tightener simply can't be fitted through the hole without clamping a small portion of the cover, which causes an un-even and loose connection.
All in all a pretty scant cover with quality control issues across the board.

The Sunray is a cheap nasty cover as well, and will let in a little bit more dust than the Minelab cover.

You'd reckon someone would stitch up and produce a very strong well made enviro cover that offers solid protection from dust/bumps. We do need one that's for sure.
A few in Australia, America, and I think a small British firm are making tough canvas enviro covers in an array of colours with visors and a clear front for the GPZed's and 3030's.....some with rear speaker flow.
As there are thousands more XTerra's around you'd think we'd have a few decent ones to choose from now.

I bought a good dust cover for the electronics unit for $17.50 on Ebay. (Rain Dust Cover for Minelab x-terra metal detector series 705/305/505) from andreyle. Has worked great.\

I didn't like the Minelab one at all. I gave mine away. I got a really nice one on the bay that came from Ukraine it zips on the side.

I just ordered mine from Andre via EBAY yesterday. He has about 7 pictures showing it from different angles. I think his website, not the EBAY site is {sorry, but site rules=no free advertising}. it comes from the Ukraine. Has a zipper and looks good in camo.

That sounds like the one I have. That is a good one.

Sorry about the link. Lesson learned, won't happen again.

After I originally posted the question, I have learned of a person that custom makes covers for metal detectors. Have any of you tried that cover?

Those covers from Andre look terrific.....zippered too. And you can get them with a grip protector for just a few extra bucks.

I ordered one from Andreyle in Ukraine and it fits perfect. It looks good too. Thanks to all for informing me about them.

i saw the 42 dollar price back when i bought my 705 too, then i watched a guy on ytube use low temp pvc shrink bags (5"x10") and a heat gun on low range. then you trim the excess length off the bottom and reinforce the headphone plug area and the coil cable fitting area with some 2" wide clear packing tape before you cut them out. just make sure that before you bag it and shrink it on, that you clean the face of the control box really clean. if you don't mind doing that, it works great. whenever it gets scratched up and dirty, you just cut it off like a snake shedding it's skin and your detector is brand new again. i found 50 of those bags on ebay for about 7 dollars.

I keep my 705 covered all the time. I don't want the control panel to suffer wear from grimy dirt digging fingers primarily. Need to keep the wet out too. I've been using shrink bags on metal detectors for years. They are cheap (appx $10 for 500 bags) and 30 seconds with a hair dryer snugs them right up. Water, dust or dirt no problem. I prefer them to vinyl bags because they are light, clear as glass, efficient and cost effective.

Just received mine from somewhere in Russia. Bought it off Amazon for under $30 including shipping. It fits snuggly, has a zipper on the side, and does not interrupt with the coil connection.

I'll get a picture.

Here is my Xterra cover and TDK WR700 wireless headphone setup. I got a 90 degree angle headphone jack that goes from the standard 1/4" in to 1/8" out. The adapter connector from the wireless TDK dongle to the 90 degree headphone plugin comes with the TDK. There is already Velcro on the back of the control box cover. It is there so that if you are not using headphones, you can close the flap. Now all you have to do is to sticky a piece off Velcro to the dongle and attach it to the back of the cover. The camo cover for the handle also is attached by Velcro.
