Hello Crow duck

I'm new to the X-70 but quickly found what setup to use similar to my setup on the Explorer and the same as yours. I have the explorer and use the iron mask 16- (Negative) with ferrous mode, The X-70 does have a setup which responds the same with the Explorer when using iron mask 16- with ferrous mode.

With the X-70, Search in all metal mode using the two-tone feature. Use auto tracking or if you're one who can adjust GB manually then that is fine as well. This setup is so close to the same you use on the explorer when using ferrous and iron mask at 16-.

Depending on the area you search, Adjust the sensitivity according to ground conditions. Same as you would on the Explorer.

The X-70 is a fun detector, Allot lighter and balanced better than the Explorer. Depending on the type of hunting you do, You may not go back to the Explorer.

You have three patterns on the x-terra 70 which are the factory programs. Basicly unlike the exp II where you can create your own pattern or program from scratch you can manipulate one of the factory patterns and make it your own. I have turned pattern 2 into my own and use that particular setting for parks. As far as tones go start low and work your way up until your more confident with the machine. Stick with the manuals sensitivity settings as they are pretty good and as you begin to master certain ground areas Im sure you will change these settings to meet your own demands. The Eliptical 18.75 khz DD coil is great for beaches and prospecting mode.
Cheers!

One more question,do you turn off tracking if you find a target and can you sweep over a target several times with no trouble.
thanks ,

Hello crowduck,

Regardless if using the auto tracking or manual GB, I leave it alone and dig up the target and carry on to the next signal. At first when experimenting, I was comparing the two GB modes on targets to see if the signal would disappear when using the auto tracking at an old lot full of iron, The signal was still there.

This goes against everything I've known and read from the X-70 manual, It recommends to shut off auto GB in the trashy areas. I'm following Tom's recommendation as before I would have did a proper GB in a clear area and then lock in the GB.

So, I'm still in the experimenting stages with the X-70 and will use this setup up soon in an 1850's gold mining town, The town has giving up some neat relics and seated coins in the pass but it takes a special detector to search this area due to the mineralization and iron masking.

I use all metal all the time. sensitivity is usually set at about 18-20, which may sound low compared to what you use on the Explorer however don't compare numbers. If you get an iffy signal switch to program 1 to see how much it breaks up, if it still gives a chirp dig it. The depth meter is very accurate so older stuff will read about 5 bars down. Pinpointing is pretty accurate, but move the coil slowly back over the target and watch the ring become solid. If you have trouble pinpointing, switch to prospecting mode and use it like a VCO pinpointer. This machine is a great unit and will reward you with some great finds.
