X-Terra 705 or Safari? PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Hello- I have spent the past 2 months heavily reading these forums and doing tons of research for a well rounded detector. Tax refund time is drawing near and I am now down to the X-Terra 705 or the Safari as finalists for my first MD. I just need some help with making a final choice between these two quality machines. I do apologize if this is a repeat question of an old topic/post. I will be coin shooting parks, relic hunting old homesteads & settlements, and detecting fresh water beaches. Since I live in Northern Wisconsin, I won't be prospecting for gold or detecting salt water beaches. Overall weight of the unit is not an issue for me. Also, I am looking for something to grow into and not out of. Right now I am leaning more towards the Safari, because I would be exceeding it's initial base cost after adding all of the extra coils for the 705. I only want to buy "new" so I know exactly what I have to start with and my budget is $1,000 max. I respect your advice & opinions and any help will be truly appreciated. Sorry so winded....

Best Regards,
John

I own the x70 and have used the safari on a few hunts, here is my review of when I used it. It is a nice machine, I was impressed

I have had my Safari since the 1st of December 2009, although it seems to be a very capable machine, I still take my 705, and to be honest, use it more than the Safari.
Don't get me wrong, I've had just about every "Bell's & Whistle" Machine out there, but the Safari has yet proved it's self in the field. I think that it will be another great tool to hunt the old parks and get the silver. Guess I'm just a Terra junkie and can't turn loose of it for very long, just a ol' trusty friend I guess!!!!!

Hi, I have a X-Terra 70(also a GP-3000 and Musketeer Advantage) which is a great detector and I look for coins, jewellery, and gold nuggets. I just bought a round 10.5" HF DD for it. But if I was not a gold nugget hunter and strickly-only looked for coins, jewellery, and relics IMO I would get an E-Trac as an absolute first choice of all metal detectors on the market, BUT the Safari as a second choice which is almost the same as an E-Trac. The Safari has a single(1) set of numbers but the E-Trac has more information of what is in the ground with a double(2) set of numbers. If you can swing the extra money get the E-Trac. if $1,000 is your budget get the Safari. But the disadvantage and drawback is heavier and a slower sweep speed with all FBS and BBS machines and they will get you no more depth in black dirt and ploughed fields. But you can get huge sized WOT and SEF after-market coils for the E-Trac and Safari and not for the X-Terra. I suppose you have already looked at the LTD & DFX and the new Prizm 6T & Spectra V3, and also the new F75 LTD & T2 LTD Camo when you were shopping. That said, you cannot go wrong with a X-Terra 705 as it is first choice in many peoples books. IMHO(InMyHumbleOpinion).

I haveen't used either the Safari or the Exterra 705 BUT... the Exterra is the top of the line in it's class while the Safari is a stripped down E-TRAC. I have an E-TRAC and it is the best machine I have ever used. I am planning on buying an Exterra 705 too. I have too many machines right now so I am selling several of them to get the Exterra 705. I expect it to be an awesome machine with a good compliment of coils. Also... it is LIGHT.

If I were you I would either get an E-TRAC or a 705. You have to consider if you get the Exterra, you're probably going to want most of the coils to go with it, I know I will. At that point it's cost will be in the ballpark with the E-TRAC, which need's only one coil, the 11" Pro coil.

That is like saying the Whites prizm 6t is at the top of it's class and the Whites M6 and MXT are at the bottom of theirs making the prizm somehow the better machine.
The X-Terra and the Safari are completely different machines. The Safari being a FBS frequency machine and the xterra being a single frequency machine even though you can change the frequency by changing the coil it's still a single frequency.
I am not saying one is better than the other, but to say that since the Safari is in the bottom of the FBS class it is somehow subpar to the X-terra 705 because the 705 is in the top of the single frequency class just isn't the case.

You can not go wrong with either machine, but I too was in this same dilemma and went with the safari. I hunted side by side with my new hunting partner this weekend who uses an etrac and we compared targets and I was able to hit every target that his etrac hit. He has the ability to better determine the conductivity of the target better than I and tweak the machine more, but the etrac will run you several hundred more dollars. I wanted simplicity.

I can't recommend one over the other because I have never used an xterra, but I sure like my safari.

I think if you take time to learn either machine you will be more than happy. They are BOTH great detectors

I didn't say that, I said that the Safari is subpar to the E-TRAC and that the Exterra is top of the line in it's class. I realize they are different but if it were me i'd buy either an E-TRAC or an Exterra 705... but that's just my opinion.

Hey John, welcome to the X-Terra forum. Here is the link to a post I made about 5 months ago, concerning the Safari and the X-Terra...

I agree. I own several X-Terras and the one I use 99% of the time is the 705. Although I've owned several different FBS detectors in the past, the only one I have now is the Etrac. I figure if the functionality is available, why not put it to use? HH Randy

I have owned both the X-70 and the Safari but I have changed to the E-Trac. The safari had proven to me the deeper machine and had better separation. The Safari is a heavier MD and I was fatigued sooner with it and being a FBS I covered less ground than with the X-70. Bottom line is that I found much more "keepers" with the Safari than with the x-70. I trusted the Safari to tell me what was below the coil more than the X-70. I dug a lot more crushed screw caps and bottle caps with the X-70.
If you have a fast pace when detecting buy the X but if you go slow and want the deeper coins (I hunt coins) than go with the Safari. I have seen the Safari used for as low as $650, if you can find a deal like that buy it. I have seen X-70s for as low as $350. Buy the 2 for the price of a new Safari. I stated before that I own an E-Trac now and if you can find a used one for $1000-$1200 don't hesitate!

Hello again,

Thank you very much for the input everyone, it helped me get to the next level with my decision process. For years I used to be into astronomy and I must admit that the MD community is much more helpful & friendlier than they ever were. "JMHO" Sorry I'll get back on topic, I just had to share that thought with you. I think that I am going to go with the Safari or I might even make the big jump & splash right into the E-Trac and be done with the need for any future upgrading. For either unit in real trashy areas I'll just buy a smaller coil if need be. In the future, I'll invest in a X-Terra 70(5) as a backup/family use detector. I do realize that if I go with a "New" E-Trac, I just blew my $1,000 budget right out of the water and that's why I don't gamble at the local casino. I'll post again once I make my purchase and I'll gladly share any worthy finds with you all once our long winter is over with. Thanks again for taking the time to help me. Happy Hunting!

Regards,
John

I tried to send u a PM, but it is not going thru.........??
Where are you located? I know 2 dealers who you might want to talk to about getting an etrac. I don't want to openly post it.

This thread has been helpful to me as well. I'm sporting a X-terra 50 and have been impressed with it so far. Was thinking about the 705,but also eyeing others too. I've been looking hard at the Safari and I think this thread has been a big help in leaning toward the Safari. Thanks for all the great input.

I couldn't agree with you more. Although I got some great info with the same topic on the Safari thread, this X-Terra forum sure gave me a lot of input. Thanks again!

Hi Goes4ever-

I don't know, maybe I didn't check a box when signing up and that's why it didn't go through? Does PM stand for private message and how do you do that? Sorry, I'm new to this forum thing. Is there a way of getting you my e-mail with out posting it? By the way, I live in the Northern Wisconsin/U.P. Michigan area.

Thanks,
John

Hello all,

My first metal detector search is officially over. Hooray! Based on all of my research since Thanksgiving and the valuable help from the "amazing" Safari/Quattro & X-Terra forum members, I went with what I felt was the "sleeper" out of the bunch and just ordered a Safari today. I am looking forward to learning this machine and bench testing it until the snow melts. I am also getting Andy Sabisch's "Mastering the Quattro" for further instruction. Thanks again for all of the help!

Regards,
John

yes PM is private messaging. See if you can send me a PM with your email, if not, no worries since you already ordered.

I don't know what's wrong on my end as for not being able to PM on this forum. I don't even see the option like on other forums. Does anyone know what to do?
