X-Terra 705 Ground Balancing Problem?

BTaylor

New member
I have a 705 with two coils that I purchased used. A 6" DD 18.75kHz coil and a 9" Concentric 7.5kHz coil. When I ground balance the 6" DD coil it ground balances no matter which method I use in the manual. When I ground balance the 9" Concentric the detector starts chattering when balancing and continues chattering after the detector is ground balanced. It does this when using manual or auto GB. If I use tracking GB with the 9" coil the detector is quite and does not chatter. If I adjust the noise cancellation to +2, I can GB both manual and auto with a slight amount of chatter. I am using factory presets before I start to ground balance. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Bill

Welcome aboard Bill!

Without knowing a little more to begin with, I'm inclined to think that the problem that you're having is at least two-fold. First and most importantly, you need to use the auto Noise Cancel feature first thing before every hunt. You can even benefit from using it at various places around a site while hunting, and I would also re-ground balance afterward each time as I have found that EMI can have an effect on GB.

The other thing that you need to pay attention to to maintain stability is Sensitivity. It should be low enough to be quiet, but high enough to sacrifice as little depth as possible (in most instances). And interconnected with Sensitivity is your swing speed. If the machine is stable with the coil still, but it seems chatty once you start swinging, it's probable that you just need to slow down. Your swing should be of a speed that allows you to isolate each tone or threshold null. You need to be prepared to halt on a good tone when you hear it, and be able to isolate and confirm it. If you decide to turn the Sens down, do it one click at a time until it's stable.

Hope this helps. GL & HH!

something that you might want to do since you bought this unit used is to take off the coil covers and clean everything. Some times if their is fine dirt in between
the coil and cover it can cause problems when GBing and other things.

Just to be safe I would also clear all of the settings and start fresh. Follow the 3 resets shown on page 46 of the manual.

I had the same problem this last weekend. I did a Factory Reset and it cleared up. All of the other suggestions were good too and I have, at one time or another, done those too.
