X Terra 70

New member
I have never gone metal detecting in my life and I just ordered the Terra 70 for my first one. How hard is this detect er to use?

You have made the right choice. It may take a while to understand all of the tones and numbers. When I sarted with it, first I would dig just good repeatable signals. Now I tend to hunt in all metal and dig everything. Visit FAQ in this section for a huge amount of info. I also should mention I have never used prospecting so I can't comment on it's ease of use.

I would say its very user friendly. The best thing to do is go to the top of this page and go to FAQ FAQ there are videos/Manuel's and all questions you probably want to ask have been answered there all ready.

As stated the FAQ FAQ at the top of the page is an, almost unlimited source of information. Before I purchased my X-70 I read the FAQ from top to bottom, printed out many pages and read almost every post on the X-70 I could find. So, yes, I dedicated alot of time in absorbing as much info. as I could before I ordered mine. However, I still feel that the machine is very user friendly and easy to gain confidence in. Learn it and it will reward you.

it is simple to use! I watched the video on MLOTV one time, read the manual once, took it outside in my yard with manual in hand and started using it, the first hunt with it amazed me, it is an awesome detector with great depth abilities! Nice choice

You have made a very good choice! Congrats on the new X-Terra! It is my first machine also. I have had it a year and am still enjoying every hunt with it. As stated the faqfaq will really help you. Good luck to you and happy hunting, Beale.

I know everyone keeps mentioning the faqfaq but honostly i printed many different sections because i was a beginner with this machine, and between the faqfaq and reading these posts i am very comfortable with it now.Great machine you will love it just hang in there and good luck

I did almost the same, first detector I bought an Xt70. I've used an old garret? about 20 years ago, but caught the bug again..
Havent had much of a chance to go out with it yet, but soon..

Or a real compliment???

I agree you are a Fisher fan! But with a little luck, we might just find a cure for that.

you said: the X-70 is the "best first detector choice a newbie could make"

If you are talking about ease of use, I agree. A "newbie" could likely start out with the X-70 and become very proficient (and productive) in a relatively short period of time. Tough to beat a "first detector choice" that has so many automatic capabilities that you can actually "turn it on and go". Yet, one that also offers settings and adjustments that allow you to tweak it for almost any type of hunting. Just off the top of my head, I can think of...........28 two-digit notch segments, 5 audio tone options, a huge visual display, auto GB with manual override, manual GB, Auto Tracking, Beach mode, Auto Noise Cancel, TID stability, three flexible pattern modes, an all metal prospecting mode with adjustible iron mask, adjustible threshold, audio and visual pinpoint mode with depth indication. separate audio settings for use with or without headphones, a choice of using one of eight coils (at three different frequencies) that communicate to the control housing via a data link, AND have a cable that actually screws into the control housing instead of plugging in like a speaker on a stereo. I'm sure I have left out some critical factors. But regardless, I can't think of any other "first detector choices" that offer this many features, and this much functionality. (there is a big difference between features and functionality)

On the other hand, if you are talking about performance, there are thousands of posts on this site that will substantiate that the X-70 is a strong performer in the field. And having gotten to know many of these folks over the past few years, I can vouch for the fact that there are as many, if not more, "seasoned veterans" as there are "newbies". The X-70 performs well on coins, relics, gold prospecting, beach hunting........flexible enough to do just about any type of metal detecting you want to do. Yet rigid enough to not worry about breaking a piece of the rod assembly, or pulling the coil cable lose, when you put it to use. I've had some good Fishers over the years. I remember buying my first 555 back around in the late 70's, followed shortly by a 1266. And I've had my share of CZ's as well. I loved my CZ-5's. But times are a changin'! So if First Texas is now considered to be the "new Fisher", I'll have to go along with you on this one. The X-Terra 70 must be the "best first detector choice" a newbie could make. But you better keep that between the two of us. Some of your Fisher buddies who are just starting out with an F2, F4, F5 or F70 might be a bit upset when they find out they didn't buy the "best" detector they could have bought!

Ya know, backhanded or not, that was a pretty good compliment. Considering it came from a self proclaimed Fisher guy! Thanks for stopping by. HH Randy

but didn't feel it neccessary since the X70 can stand on its own merits. You summed it up pretty darn well Randy!

Well said Randy! I bought into the F75 hype a couple months ago and lets just say I wouldn't have another one if you gave it to me for free. But, I've already had more success with the Xterra 70 than all the units I have had so far. JP Savage's cracks sound like jeolousy to me.

Well, good ole' Jack is reading an Xterra forum for some reason. My guess is he likes 'em. I've air tested the F75 vs. the 70, and no matter what the F75 fans say, it doesn't compare in depth air test wise. Now they may say that the dirt matrix bla bla bla bla, you know what I mean. But a detector that is not as "deep" in an air test will not improve in the ground, no matter what Dankowski says about the CZ 3D. If I could make one improvement on the Xterra 70, it would be a little more of a kick in speaker and headphone volume. But that's about it.

When I recently bought my x50 I did an "A-B" comparison with my 1266x and a new F70. The x50, in an air test, out performed both by about 2 inches. The x50 and the x70 air tested virtualy the same. In actual hunting the x50 has so far out performed my old 1266x in stability by a long shot. The GB and noise cancel equals stabilty equals more depth. IMHO.

Next thing you know he'll own an E-Trac until F-Troop.....................................

Not jealousy! I find good stuff with every detector I use! The reason I post over here even though I no longer have an X70 is to give a helping hand when I can and to spar a bit with BB and Digger. We don't always see eye to eye on things but, that does not interfere with our friendship!

The X70 is a great first choice or as you found out, a machine that offers the performance someone with 25-30 years in the hobby will enjoy.

Heck you can't beat the weight and balance, the intuitive easy to understand user interface and .... oh yeah.. Its a top performer too.

The main reason I recommend the X70 to newbies is the short learning curve. The average person should be able to hunt like a pro in short order with any of the Exterras. For those that have been in the hobby long enough to know what they like and need in a machine for their particular type of hunting then other choices in detectors may come into play.

An I ain't saying that just 'cuz I got a free one from ML either! ;)

the statement about the F70's software compared to the F75? Maybe they got'er'dun :poke:

Tom and I have been discussing the pros and cons of a variety of detectors for several years. And although our "hunting conditions" vary somewhat, we agree on quite a few of them. One thing I think every one could agree to is that there isn't one detector that is "perfect" for everyone. Different strokes, as they say.

And Tom, you are welcome to post over here anytime you want. Your experience is appreciated and I value your opinions. Well, most of the time, anyway! :poke: HH Randy
